To all you Florida visitors, we have them that big here too. So be careful when out in the woods.
You need to be more than just careful of where you are walking. A rattler that size can strike up to 1.5 times the length of its body.

 Ah the tricks camera's can play. It's why you can't take pictures of dogs or horses up close. The nose is always larger in proportion.

It's hard to say about the length of the snake from the angle that Neil is holding it out in front of him toward the camera but I would say 7-8'. I have seen some that would go 6' but not one as large as this one. Premont is in central South Texas about half way between Corpus Christi and Laredo or 150 miles due south of San Antonio on US281.

My son killed 4 rattle snakes in his neighborhood in AZ. One was about 2 feet from front door. They had the front door open with the storm door shut. One of the cats was watching this snake from inside. He went to check to see what the cat was watching.

That is one of the biggest rattlers I have ever seen excep for thatbig one in the zoo. Did you cook it? you know they say it almost like chicken.

Perspective on the photo reminds me of those tourist shots where the person in the photo is far enough in front of the leaning tower.. or the Statue of Liberty, to be able to appear to be holding it in thier fingers.. only this time it's reversed. Judging from how tight the snake stick is around it's belly, it is probably between 5-6'... (I say this, because it looks about the same as the Timber Rattler in the snake Grabber that I used to handle all the time)..maybe longer... but without a tape measure, it is hard to say... How tall is the man??.. that would give SOME idea of size relative to the snake dangling from the end of that four foot long grabber.

Don't think that just big ones can be dangerous. We were hiking in Wyoming once with the kids, Paul heard a rattle and pulled back on our son and right in front of him the rattlesnake struck-would have hit the kid if Paul had not grabbed him. It was about 3-4 feet long and had 5 rattles (our friend who was with us who happened to work with the parks and game dept killed it). you can not be too cautious when hiking in rattle snake country, and there are not many places they aren't found. This event certainly made our boys much more cautious when hiking. we are used to the ones in the hot dry country, they love rocks and old buildings.
