Fuel Choices

With the significant cost differential between diesel at Pilot/Flying J vs. other stations ($.25-$.40 per gallon), I'm curious how many of you choose Pilot/Flying J for their convenience, mainly the extra space to maneuver, over the cost savings?

The Pilot fuel card certainly helps as well as it eliminates the need for prepaying inside the store, and then going back in for your receipt afterwards.

We use an old Pilot RV Advantage card to get 5 cents a gallon off diesel and then pay for it with a Sam's club Mastercard to get 5% rebate off the total bill. That way we get the easy in and out, food on site, places to overnight and a good price on deisel I can trust.

We fuel up at truck stops because of the ease of getting in and out. So many regular gas stations make it hard for RVs to fuel up. If it costs a bit more, then that’s probably still cheaper than fixing your rig if you accidentally hit something because there is no room to manoeuvre.

I generally do not fuel with the rig hooked up but do when needed or I find a great deal. Normally I find it easier refuel after the rig is disconnected. I have not had an issue finding good stations but often don't opt for the $.30 higher truck stop.

I almost never fuel at truck stops.

I carry about 75 gallons so I can fuel after I drop the rig.

I'm not opposed to fueling there. It all depends on what we need at the time. Sometimes convenience costs a bit more.

Pilot is the only way when we are hooked up for easy in easy out with restrooms and a variety of food. They are spaced out so I don't get too far below 1/2 a tank of fuel. If not hooked up I might try someplace cheaper if convenient.

We have the pilot/ FJ RV plus card that gives 8 cents off on diesel besides as said above we like the convenience.

We actually planned our last trip (2 days of interstate) while in our car returning from where we would be towing later. When hitched I always use truck stops only for fueling and breaks. They have a lot more room and it seems silly to risk an accident to save a few pennies.
I know most people will drive way out of their way to save 3 cents on the gallon but seriously does that really warrant all the worry. After all on a 30 gallon fill your only talking about 90 cents. Let that sink in for a bit.........Now isn't there something more important to fret over?

Same here. I hate the Pilot/FJ and NEVER use them. Get away from the interstate for best price.

When hooked I prefer P/FJ. Easy in/out and safer. Think about $30K to $500K for an RV and $25K to $70K for a toad or TV. Now chasing pennies on fuel? Maybe just camp in the driveway.

The biggest discouragement to me is the fact they both only sell 20% bio diesel, at least on the west side of the country.

It's 20% bio diesel in the Houston area also. I live 2 miles from Flying J and never buy there diesel. The Valero across the street is usually 30 cents cheaper. When traveling I carry an extra 60 gallon tank and try to unhook so that I can buy the cheapest diesel around the area. My extra fuel tank gives me much more convenience and has saved me 100's of dollars since 2012.I never liked filling up and then start looking for the next fuel station.

If you don't go thru the truck lanes the auto diesel is lower.

Add the reduced mileage with 20% bio with the increased cost of the fuel and it is much more than you think.

Just saying.

Interesting. In our neck of the woods(Ohio), they are the same price in the auto lane at the Pilots/FlyingJ`s.

Also there is an average of 25-45 cents per gallon difference from fueling on the Interstate vs getting fuel 3-4 miles off the interstate in town.

I drive semi and watch the prices pretty closely. Its a territorial marketing scheme they use... When it goes up by me, it drops in price 75 miles north or south of me...when it drops here, it goes up in other areas of the state.

X2.

I avoid Pilot/FJ as much as possible. Losing up to 2mpg with a 38 gallon tank can make a difference on my day's drive and on top of paying a bunch more per gallon. 2017 in PA it was as high as .65/gallon higher off I-81. And the food - mediocre at best unless you have a death wish for clogged arteries

I have used some truck stops but I try to avoid them. I have never had a problem getting fuel in a regular gas station. Hardest part is finding the D pump. I am in Phoenix tight now and D is over $1 cheaper a gallon than Ca.
