Re: Unhook or not???

Hey all,
These last three nights, I've kept the Monty hooked to the truck. I put the legs down, and take the pressure off the truck, but I don't unhook. It just seems like extra unnecessary work. Is this an acceptable practice, or should I be unhooking every night? I don't mean to sound so naive...but well, I AM naive when it comes to traveling with a trailer. Any feedback would sure be appreciated. Thanks...

If overnighting in a parking lot or truck stop; I do not unhook, open slides or drop jacks. This is what works for me...

We do it same as you. We unhitch only when necessary for some reason, such as
- we can't get reasonably level without unhitching
- the site won't accomodate us without unhitching
- we need to use the truck for some reason.

We drop landing gear and rear stabilizers, just to get some stability. If it were just one of us we wouldn't bother since movement only bothers the second person. We'll use boards and/or the airbags to get as close to level as we can. We do deploy the slides just because we like it that way. We only do minimal setup inside the coach.

Pretty much the same as Steve when on the road and over nighting. We stayed hooked to the truck for 8 days on our trip down to Arizona. We do level side to side and the way our rig is set up we are level front to rear if on a level site.we do drop the front legs and we do drop the stabilizers.

Same as Steve and Rich - Drop the legs to take some of the weight off the truck.

Same here...as long as we are level fore and aft, we sometimes do not put down the landing gear.

Like Rich, we level side to side and try to level front to back. Keep in mind you can raise the nose an inch or two or so with the landing gear. The rear of the truck will just rise with the pin until the truck no longer has pinweight on it. So if you do this watch the hitch to make sure you don't raise the pinbox off the hitch saddle. If you need to raise the nose more, use boards under the rear truck wheels, both sides equally.

You can raise the rear of the coach by putting boards under the wheels on both sides of the coach.

Like all the rest, if not needed, I do not unhook. Just drop the front jack stands unless it really unlevel. Saves lots of time the next morning if trying to make miles.

Like everyone else, don't unhook if just spending the night unless we decide we want to go to Pizza Hut or whatever.
We do level the sides and rear for the slides.

One thing we do when we stop overnight is unplug from the truck so we do not put a strain on the truck battery. Be sure you rmember to plug back in before you leave.

That is a great question. Thanks for asking. I also do not unhook if I can get close to level. I do like the idea of unplugging the connection between the truck and trailer. I do put the front landing gear down for a little more stabilization.

Why unhook if you don't have to. The only time we unhook is if we are unable to get fairly level front to back or if we know we have to go some place with the truck. It eliminates just a little extra work if you don't have to unhook. I don't even hook up the water if I don't have to.

We've stayed hooked up lots of times. Don't do anything other than make sure we are close to level and pull out the slides. It isn't always possible because we are so long. Also we like to fuel up when unhooked and then find a good steak. Remember if you stay hooked up overnight, it isn't for very long.

Well, it's good to know I was doing that part right. I also unhooked the power to the truck, especially since I had CG power. I raised the Monty to take pressure off the truck so it could rest too. Thanks for all the feedback to my question, I really appreciate it!!

I think it is a good thing to unhook the power from the truck. Friend for some reason found his truck battery drained once. That was more than enough times for him. Sooooo, lessons learned from him, I always pull the plug from the truck.
