Bearing Repack

I repacked the wheel bearings this weekend. In my opinion the wheel bearings could have gone quite a bit longer. We use our Monty almost every second weekend so it does not sit for long periods of time. It had lots of grease in the hubs and the bearings looked great the grease was good. I think if you leave your unit sit for long periods of time they should be repacked every year. If you are using regularly you could less frequently as long as they where packed properly the first time. Cost was $4.00 for grease, $100 dollars for seals and approximately 2hrs. of labour.(all prices are Canadian) probably cheaper in the States

I believe 10,000 miles is recommended, but the amount of grease in hub is not an indicator of how bearings are. When we repacked the bearings we checked to see how they were wearing and and the condition of race and rollers, as well as seing thats seals were not leaking or grease getting on brakes. Also 10 different people will give you 10 different answers, go with manufacturors recommendations.

The seal price of the seals is not a typo the prices where in Canada. I was a Heavy Duty Mechanic for 30 years and I did check out the bearings which where in excellent shape. On RV's a lot of people only use them for vacation and long weekends so the bearings should be repacked every year. When any type of vehicle sit in one spot for extended periods of time it is very hard on the bearings so they should be checked more often.

Wow, the last seals I picked up at the RV dealer were about $7.00 a piece, and I think that was high. Don't think I want to shop in Canada.
