yahoo

Just read an article that states are increasing the speed limits again. Texas leads the pack at 80mph on some of their interstates. While many of the midwest states are still holding their 75mph, states in the east are now catching up. Although this does not help when we are towing, for those of us who travel alot w/o the coach, it sure helps!!

Pulling the Monty or not I rarely exceed 65MPH. I find 60 to 65 my best fuel mileage numbers with or without the trailer and besides, like many other of us retired folks, I am no longer in a hurry to go any where.

Guess when they jump the limit to 80 you're just gonna have to keep an eye open for us slow pokes.

Glenn, that sounds like us we set the speed at about 67 and that is where it stays, we have the same kind of truck you do only it is a 2004 and it gets real good MPG at that speed.

Glen,

You read my mind with your post. Bob doesn't drive over 55 when he is pulling the trailer. I can see it now he is at 55 and everyone else wants to be at 80. Oh well I guess they will just have to wait their turns to get around us.

Doing some web searching on this, I do see where they are reporting 3 states have raised RURAL speed limits to 80. I don't see Michigan in that list, Indiana, Iowa and Texas are the 3 I am finding references too. I even checked one of the major Detroit area TV stations web sites, WXYZ.com and found nothing there about Michigan doing so.

We won't tow that fast, we like 57 to 62 as well, also find we get the best mileage there. In my car or truck, solo, ain't gonna do it either. I'll just move over and they can pass me.

Iowa!!!!!! Thank goodness, driving across I-80 can one of two things. Crazy, as the trucks seem to go 100mph or two, mind blowing as that state never seems to end. =)

I do most of my towing at 65-68 mph, truck really sips along at 14 mpg towing the coach. When I am empty and out west here I run 77-79 mph and the truck still drinks ever so easy, avg. 19 mpg at that speed. If I drop it down to the slow poke speeds of 65-68 mph(j/k) I avg. 22 mpg.

I run 65MPH..That is where I feel comfortable. I did get off cruse in Mich last week, Speed limit 70MPH and found myself doing 80 and steady as a rock. It is to easy to go to fast so we try to stay on cruse.A speeding ticket is expensive not to mention the increase in insurance rates and I was thinking..how long would it take to stop this thing at 80MPH???

We didn't use to have a speed limit in Montana until a couple of years ago. It was whatever deemed "safe and prudent". If a trooper felt you were going too fast, he issued you a ticket for "misuse of natural resources." The tickets were five dollars, and you paid it right there on the spot! Wonder if we will return to those good old days? Doesn't really matter for us either, we set the crusie and away we go!

Since "sitting around the campfire" has nothing to do with RVing, here's my 2 cents worth.

I can't drive 55.

When y'all are driving along and a red sports car goes zooming by & disappears from view,

That's me !!

Lets see - tires rated for 65 max sustained speed (and lots of post about them not holding up even at that speed); fuel burn higher; braking distance increases; oh yeah - our great 'smooth' concrete surfaces. $$$$ going somewhere!!!

Be grateful for roads good enough to drive 60-80mph. I drove into a mud hole up here just north of Seward this morning and ran into two puffins and an Orca whale that were lost.

Virgil: Don't know what a puffin is, but an Orca, heard of them. Pretty good sized pot hole there --- hope truck and rig didn't suffer .

States getting more money every year yet roads going down hill faster than they can repair them. Take care and keep the ole shiny side up!!

Well, they can raise the speed limits here in the southeast, but when I pull the Montana, I intend to keep it at around 55. I just feel comfortable there. Unlike Sammy Hagar, “I CAN drive 55!”

Even when we do not have the Montana along, and I push the speed up to around 70 on the Interstate, Marsha is uncomfortable and “suggests” I slow down.

Dont most states have a speed limit for vehicles over so many tons that keeps you from going 80 anyway? Maybe its just Illinois.

Many states have a posted limit of 65 mph for those folks w/ GVWR over 10,000 lbs, 5 or more axles or any vehicle towing a trailer. I use the 65-68 mph rule when towing as that hits 2,000 rpm's for me, which is my best towing MPG. Now when not towing, I like to hit the speed limit plus 3. =) I remember back in the day when Montana had no limit, I could make it from the Idaho/MT border to the MT/Wyoming border in 5 hours & 40 mins. Oh how those were the days of no speed limits and fast sports cars.
