Propane heater

Has anyone installed a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy (MH9BX) in the Monte? I am looking to hook it up to the onboard propane tanks.
What hoses, fittings, and where do you run the hose?

Any details would be appreciated. I know that MLH hooked up the larger unit, but that one is different.

I'm interested in seeing how to set one up. We've got a big one that works great, but even refilling the little tanks can be a pain. The info I was able to get on hooking it up to the Monty's supply had something about needing a filter and only using BBQ sized tanks. Don't know why there would be a pressure difference between them and the one's in the trailer.

Walt, I don't have a propane heater, but I have used 30, 40 and 100 lb cylinders to run my propane grills with no problem. I saw many 100 lb cylinders connected to RVs so I doubt there us a difference

I've run one off a 5 gallon tank with no problems.

I have a Portable Buddy heater although I have not used it in the trailer. It is designed to run off the small propane cylinders but I do have an 8' adapter hose and have run it from a 20# tank. That is OK per the heater instructions. And I see no reason you could not run it from the trailer 30# tanks.

We do not dry camp, thus have no reason to have an extra propane heater. What we use for extra heat are two Lasko towers which use the CG's electricity and not our propane.

You can get hoses to hook the portable heater up to a non regulated tank. The portable heater comes with it's own regulator, so you have to hook it up to a non regulated tank. Therefore I need to tap into the trailer before the regulator.

I use one in my Monty. I tied into the stove lp line. Mr Buddy offers a lp line to hook it up with or you can pick one up at the hardware. Mine works great.

Russ - Are you looking for something like this to attach a second hose to one of your tanks?
This place also sells longer hoses that may work for you such as this one..

We put a tee in the black 1/2 inch gas line which runs under our 3402 about where the cargo door is. We drooped a small portion of the under belly and ran about 8ft of flexible proane hose up through the storage cabinet under the sink. We put a shut off valve there and connected about another 12ft of flexible propane hose with a quick disconnect end that connects to the Big Buddy heater. This all stores neatly in the little cabinet out of sight.

This allows us to utilize the heater in the front room or the bedroom either one. Their is no noise and very little propane use and when dry camping no electrical draw on battery. We used same set up in our Motor Home previously and really enjoyed the heater. I think the biggest plus is not having to listen to the Montana heater going on and off all night.

It sounds like mlh and rvgwen have the larger heater. That one has a quick disconnect on it, so when you hook it up it bypasses the regulator on the heater. My heater is unable to bypass the regulator, so I need to tee off the tank before it goes to the RV regulator. Thanks BB TX for those parts. That will work. I will probably need to hook up 2 hoses together so I can move the heater about the RV.

Russ - sounds like you've the same problem I see. Altho I've the Big Buddy, it doesn't have a way to bypass any internal regulator I can see. I also don't want to have a BBQ tank sitting inside, and running a hose through an open window or the door kind of defeats the whole purpose. We've used it a couple times while dry camping and really like not having the furnace kick on and off all night long (and getting too hot, then too cold, then too hot . . . ).

Walt, I spoke with Mr. Heater and they told me that when you hook up the quick disconnect, that bypasses the regulator, so you should be good to go.

Mine has no quick disconnect, unless I've got to take it apart to find it!

The 18,000BTU model is the one with the quick disconnect. If you don't have a quick disconnect then you are like me and have to tap into the propane line before it goes into the regulator.

I've got this 18k BTU one: http://www.mrheater.com/product.aspx?catid=41&id=116 Although there's a quick disconnect mentioned in the manual, there's none on the heater or in the parts breakdown. It's got two small regulators, one for each bottle, and they also show hoses in the accessory list. Where's this thing supposed to be?

Always plenty of help here:
http://www.mrheater.com/upload/newsl...uddy_US_BL.pdf

When you connect to a non regulated refillable (big) cylinder, you must use the adapter hose that connects to the disposable bottle connection on the heater. The gas will flow through the same regulators as the disposable cylinder; like your weber Q grill' If you have one.

If your Buddy heater has quick disconnects, the flow through those connections will not pass through the built in regulator and must be supplied from an 11 IWC regulator. T-ing off the propane lines in the trailer, gives you an 11 IWC flow (anywhere downstream of the RV regulators), and MUST bypass the regulators on the heater.

If your Buddy heater does not have quick disconnects to bypass it's regulators, and you connect it to an already regulated supply, the regulator in the heater will not function.

Fauch, that's the same manual I've got and read. No quick disconnect and no way to bypass the regulators - that means a separate tank unless I want to do some plumbing work on the house ones. Now I could put a BBQ size in the forward basement and a line into the bedroom with a valve, and a short flexible one to the heater sitting on the dresser, but that would be the only place it could be & I don't like that. Guess I'm stuck with refilling bottles as two barely last a night on low.

Walt, I ordered this today. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00192JGX0/..._26725410_item
I will disconnect hose from tank on Monte and install new valve onto tank and then hook hose from Monte onto new valve. The new hose that comes with valve will also screw onto new valve. I will need to find a way to route it inside so I can move it from bedroom to kitchen area.
