Hydrastar Disc Brake Conversion

I was just checking with Etrailer about the Titian and Kodiac Disc Brake Conversion. Salesman said they no longer carrying them. They only have Hydrastar. https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Bra...SE7K-T1SO.html
Never heard of them. Has anyone used them, if so are you happy with them.
Now he just said he doesn't have Titan or Kodiac for the 7,000 axle with 1/2 lugs and 8"x 6.5 pattern.

Hydrastar is the hydraulic actuator for the system not the actual disc brakes

You can always contact Performance Trailer Braking. They installed our brakes this past June in Coos Bay. They used the Titan brakes with the Brakerite actuator. You can have them installed or just purchase the whole package. We went with the 8k rotors that have the 9/16” studs and a slightly larger outer bearing.

I stand corrected. When I bought my disc brakes from etrailer Hydrastar was not offering complete systems. I looked at the Hydrastar brake conversions on etrailer today and they look like a good way to get everything in one package.

I used a Hydrastar actuator when I converted our 2012 Montana 3585SA and it worked great. The rest of my conversion was Kodiak.

I looked at the Hydrastar web site and it looks like their on-line video shows them installing a Kodiak system.

If you do use that video as a guide, there are at least two significant errors made:
- They use the original bracket bolts. They are too short, needing at least three threads ouside of the nut. I used ARP bolts 1.25 long instead of the OEM .880

- They said tighten the spindle nut hand tight, then back off one turn. Follow Dexter's (Lippert's) IB to 50 lb ft, back off torque then finger tighten until you can install the retainer. The IB is more explicit - read it for your own understanding first.

I installed the Hydrastar actuator and am very happy with its performance

Hydrastar works well with Fords original equipment brake controller. Probably want to confirm that it is compatible with your GMC without aftermarket kit. Also when installing be sure to ground to truck and not to just the trailer frame.

I installed my own disk conversion, my son's, and my neighbors. I used Kodiak brakes, Hydrastar actuators, and both 1/4" and 3/16" nickel-copper brake lines. I don't like using the one size fits all brake line kits many installers use as you end up with about 6' - 10' of brake line coiled up underneath your RV. It's not that hard to custom cut and double flare the nickle-copper brake lines. All that being said, you can't go wrong with Titan, Kodiak, or Tie Down conversion kits or the Hydrastar or Titan actuators. All my Kodiak kits came with longer bolts for the caliper mounts so there was no shortness issue. As for extra grounding to the truck ... a properly wired pigtail's ground wire at your pin box is already terminated to your trailer frame within 3' - 6' of any install I've done. That wire grounds to your truck normally anyways.

You might also look at www.stopmytrailer.com, great prices on same equipment.

Mor-Ryde uses the Hydrastar actuator with Kodiac disc brakes or at least they did when mine were installed 3 years ago.

I have the Hydrastar actuator and am happy with it. I required the adapter for my 2016 Chevy and it works well.
As was indicated the Hydrastar rotors and calipers are something new so I can't comment on them since I also used the Kodiak rotors and calipers. The price looks good although you might want to include the battery for the emergency brake. The install was pretty easy however the way I did the install I needed longer than the 6 foot section to span from one side to the other.

They are a great investment, good luck.

Your battery in the trailer should be the one used for the emergency brake just like how it’s used for the old drum brakes. You only need a separate battery on a trailer when there isn’t any other battery, such as a cargo trailer or other utility type trailer.

I agree with rohrmann about jimc100's comment about the optional emergency brake battery. The house battery on any fiver or TT is fine for the Hydrastar's need for emergency braking. The kits for any disk brake conversion that mention a separate battery option are for trailers like smaller horse, goose neck, or cargo trailers that have no on-board battery to start with. Your on board battery is used to power your breakaway switch under the pin box right from the assembly line.

X2 or is it 3. Their write at first glance is a bit confusing. Look at the wiring schematic and instructions buried in their website.

Thanks guys for the input. I just ordered the Hydrastar Kit. I know it's going to be better than the stock brakes. I have the Tekonsha controller and it worked with the Kodiak Kit that I put on my last Hitchhiker fiver.

MORRyde did ours last fall after the MOC. It was the Hydrastar and Kodiac system. Works great!

Ray need to change the web page to www.stopyourtrailer.com I called Bill nice guy and ordered from him and cancelled my order from etrailer.com. When I ordered from etrailer, I was to receive them on Feb. 7th. after five days I asked why my order was still pending and was told they wouldn't have them till first of week of March. But their web page now says Feb 12th. I think the kit from stopyourtrailer is a better kit, but $170.00 more. But I need the kit before Feb 15th.

I highly recommend stopyourtrailer.com, Bill was very helpful and he will walk your through any step if you need help.

I too used stopyourtrailer.com and was very pleased with the product. I also found Bill to be very helpful and responsive. They were about $200 cheaper then performance trailer braking.

I bought all of my disc conversion components from Performance Trailer Braking including the 8k axles. I don't think it really matters where you get them from, other than customer service if you were to need it, but the point is to GET THEM. I won't tow a rig like mine ever again without disc brakes. Much better braking!!!
