brake help

Never had this happen before, so here goes. Inspecting bearings and brakes today and found a brake with BOTH wires to the magnet broken. Both appear to be black with no markings so how to figure out proper reattachment. I'm sure it matters. thanks in advance.

Nope, doesn't matter. The magnet is just that an Electro Magnet, works with current passing thru it, so there is not polarity issue.

Here is a trailer wiring diagram including brakes. And yes, parallel.

The brake wire (from harness) must connect to one of the wires of all four brakes. The other wire of all four brakes must connect to ground.
So effectively one side of all brakes are connected together and to the brake power source. And the other wire of all brakes are effectively connected together by connecting them individually to ground. This way a broken wire at one brake does not affect the other brakes.

Just installed a whole new brake assembly backing plate and cut the 2 black wires on mine to install the new and no it does not matter how you hook up the wires ,I was worried about that too but I looked in the Dexter manual and online sources and it says the same thing and also I was surprised how tiny the wire is inside the outer covering had to buy some tiny connecters and then coated them with liquid tape(love that stuff)

Your brake wires from the pinbox look just like black or brown two wire cord coming out of a table lamp. As stated earlier, one wire is +DC power ... the other is - ground. It makes no diference as to polarity as long as you have one brake wire going to plus and one brake wire going to minus. Behind each wheel on the street side will be 4 wires (2 each for the street side brakes and 2 each for the curb side brakes that run thru the axle. The front brake wires are hooked to a pigtail wire coming off the pinbox feed wire ... the rear brakes again 2 wires for each brake are hooked directly to the pinbox feed wire. It's good practice to solder the connections and waterproof them with say liquid tape made for automotive use. However ... crimping works too as sadly that's how most RV's come from the factory.

thanks everybody for your help. got it all buttoned up, but will need to get two clips to hold wires in place. the clips are gone or never existed, these clips hold the wire to the brake actuator arm ( magnet arm )

thanks kevin

While you are under there you might add some split wire loom around the exposed wires to give them a little more protection. I pulled the wires a little out of the holes in the axles, wrapped that area a few times with electrical tape, pushed them back in the axles, and them put on the wire loom from the axle to the hub.
Available at auto parts stores, Home Depot, etc.
