6.0 Powerstroke Noise
Towing up hills I have an intermitent whisteling noise. Our local Ford service manager took a ride with me today towing the Monty. He said the whisteling noise is the high pressure oil pump. When the engine cooling fan speeds up to the noisey level the whistle goes away. The service manager said not to worry unless it gets worse. Anyone else out there experiencing such a noise? The truck is an 06 with 22K miles. It pulls wonderfully but I don't care for the noise.
Thanks,
Jerry

Just another thought....
When towing up hills you will put a greater load onto the motor. This in turn will cause the turbo to increase air pressure to create more power. Could you be hearing "turbo whine" as it winds up???

Could be the whistle noise from turbo. They can get pretty loud.

No, I don't think it's the turbo, I'm tuned into that noise when it spools up. This noise is more steady and after the turbo has been been putting out good preasure for a while.
Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,
I did see someone post on that very thing, I just can't remember the topic. You might try a search or they may jump in on this thread.
I do have a slight whistle on mine but at lower rpm (sounds like a restricted air breather). Of course Ford says it's normal. I may go jump into a new one to see just how normal it really is before I take it back in.

There is a mult-stage fan that makes quite a lot of noise when your pulling up steeper hills. First time I heard it I thought the engine was trying to leave the truck.

I have an 05 F-250 and get the loud noise when pulling up hill. I also noticed that the temp kicked up quickly almost into the red zone. I have had to back off on the gas pedal to get a temp drop. I have my unit going in for service and will ask about it.

The temp doesn't really suddenly go up. It just appears that way because the Ford gauge stays in one spot until the temp exceeds some threshhold, then it suddenly goes up. Exactly the reason why I included a real water temp gauge in my pillar pod gauges. I prefer to see the temp creeping up so I can keep it in control and not have to suddenly react.
That noise may be the fan, as others mentioned, or the turbo. But it's hard to tell without being able to hear it and compare it to mine.

Re those guages...if they appear to be reacting slowly...tap the glass. Always works in an airplane!

Thanks for your ideas, yes the fan is quite noisy when it's at high speed but that's not the whisteling noise I'm hearing. My coolent temp. guage has never gone up at all even on a hard pull on a hot day. A real coolant temp. guage would be great to have.
Thanks again,
Jerry

Jerry, When pulling thru mountains last year from FLa.to Indiana, I too heard a whistle/whine. I thought it was my transmission. Nothing on guages showing high temps. It let the truck cool down, but the noise was still there. When I got to Indiana, I took it to the Ford dealer and had the tech ride with me. He too heard the noise. After hooking up the computer to truck to check it out, he came up with what he thought was a "waste dump" valve not properly working. They totally replaced the turbo unit and so far, no sounds/problems.

Richard,
That sounds more like my noise problem. Taking off from a dead stop with the Monty it takes two seconds or so for the turbo to wind up and deliver good power. The service manager said that was normal also???
Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,
That was the first thing I noticed about the 6.0 is the lag from a dead stop. Coming from the 7.3L I was concerned and test drove 3 different trucks before I determined it was just a characteristic of the 6.0. Once the 2 seconds pass, its a rocket and would most likely leave the 7.3 in the dust.

When taking off from a dead stop it will sometimes take a second or two of slower movement for mine to spool up and really start accelerating, when towing. Usually that's when I have an uphill climb from a stop.
Cat320, the Ford gauges aren't slow to react, they just don't react at all when the temperature is within a certain "normal" range. Once it exceeds that range it moves quickly to what the gauge should actually read. That's why so many Ford guys say their temp gauge never moves. It doesn't. Until a certain temperature. Thus my aftermarket gauge.
Richard, the Ford 6.0 does not have a waste gate. I don't understand why, but I've been told that by several Ford mechanics including one at a Ford Truck Center. I'm not sure how it avoids overboost. I've seen the boost gauge on the dash go to 29 psi. It redlines at 34 psi.

Brad,
Thanks for leting me know your 6.0 takes a while to wind up too. Your right, once it gets going it has amazing power. In my opinion, there is no reson for after market chips and such. I would like to have a real temp guage, like Richard says the stock guage never moves.

Jerry and Steve,
I did notice my temp gauge move up when pulling hills is southern California in 130 degree heat. It would jump up immediately followed by the roar of the fan. It would jump back down within a few seconds.

Yep, that's how it acts, Brad. That fan brings it right back down to the middle. But the aftermarket gauge shows it's not really running 192 or whatever the thermostat is. But it is within the range Ford considers normal when it comes back down.
