Medical sharing plans
Just curious what ya'll are doing for health insurance.
We are looking at a couple of the health sharing plans -- technically not insurance, per se, but a way to get major medical coverage. We are in decent health and just don't see paying $1200-1400 a month for traditional medical insurance.
So if anyone has experience with one of the medical sharing plans, please let us know what you think -- by forum or PM.
Thank you!

I don’t buy insurance that I don’t think is needed. I don’t buy ESPs or life insurance. I don’t have collision insurance. I don’t insure my camper, but health insurance is one I wouldn’t be without. I wouldn’t wont to be like a friend who had a $2,000,000 dollar hospital bill. If he didn’t have good insurance Duke university would have said sorry.
My wife’s monthly bill before she turned 65, 6 years ago was $1100 per month with a $2500 deductible. A 1000 or $1100 now sound like a bargain.

Have never heard of a medical sharing plan. Curious what it is.
But I agree with Lynwood. Would not be without good health care insurance. Unexpected health issues due to illness or accidents have been the financial ruin of many people. Had a cousin who had an unxpected illness with total charges near $1,000,000 before she passed away. With Medicare and BC/BS she did not have to pay a dollar.

Bill I’m lucky I still have my friend after almost 15 years but without FedX insurance I would have went to his funeral.

Lack of health insurance will bankrupt you very quickly. W have very good Employer provided health insurance and Medicare. It is not cheap but has saved us more than once.

Health insurance has got so expensive people without employee insurance or Uncle Sam looking after them just can’t afford it. You have a choice pay the mortgage and groceries or pay for health insurance. If you have someone paying for you thank your lucky stars a lot of people don’t have that luxury.

Hi, I’ve been a member for almost 2 years. The DW and I are in the process of down sizing so we can go full time. We’ve owned our 3820 fk since June 2017. My first post. Now back to the subject.
I have Liberty Heath Share and so far so good. I havent had to use it a lot but when I have it’s been great and at $300 a month for myself it is far better than the $1300 a month for conventional health insurance. I have several friends who have it and the also love it.
There are several heath share company’s out there I would suggest you studying several of them and make your decision based on what fits you best.
Health Share the way (insurance) should be.

Our Employer provided health insurance and our Medicare for both of us cost us nearly 9K a year which we PAY for. Couple of years ago wife had surgery and the final total cost was nearly 70K .It was paid by our insurance. Knee surgery and rehab for me last year was nearly 10K all paid for.Health care is expensive but one has got to have it.

Personally, we're lucky to have pretty good coverage at a reasonable price via wife being a former federal employee. But we would definitely be looking into a health sharing coverage if we had to buy in the current market.
I've heard good things about Samaritan Ministries. Many testimonies suggest that people have cut their insurance and medical costs by more than half using a Health Sharing program. I expect this is true when comparing it to buying insurance outside of a large group plan.

Thanks for your post. We looked into the current options and are strongly leaning toward Liberty Health Share's top program. I think it would be about $400 a month.
With some of these programs, you negotiate a cash price and pay the provider directly and then get reimbursed through the program; others negotiate with the provider and direct bill/pay to/from provider. I can't recall off the top of my head which way Liberty does it.

Any vet with a VA rated disability of 50% or higher can get his/her healthcare provided. I'm rated 100% so my wife is on ChampVA. We both have Medicare and Humana provides a back-up for me for what the others do not. ChampVA for dependents is the absolute best coverage available. The last 3 VA regional systems I have been in are far better than any of the local providers in those areas.

Most of these sharing plans are sponsored by Christian folks, so they must be OK.

We're both on Medicare. When we bought our Montana, we also invested in Good Sam Travel assist insurance @ $60/yr (I think). We bought it just in case Medicare didn't cover us when out on the road. It also covers sending a deceased home (hope that never happens), also an emergency plane ride home.

Understand one has to purchase what they can reasonably afford. We do not look for cheap healthcare insurance we look for one that will meet our needs.

There is a reason medical insurance is very expensive. There is a reason that regular insurance companies are regulated by state insurance commissions.

I havent looked seriously at those plans because I have good health insurance. I encourage you to look closely at the fine print. A significant question, IMHO, is what about potential bankruptcy? Is there a record of business failures? I visualize having a medical event and finding out the providers won't get paid, putting the entire bill on you.

I have become suspicious of alledged hospital "costs". I have a friend that had life threatening kidney problems a couple years ago. He had employer based insurance and as the bill summaries came in the tab totaled well over 100k. When he got the final summary from the ins provider they had negotiated the total down to around 15k which was actually lower than the 18k his employer had paid in premiums. Does make you wonder...

I am at 40% disability and all of my medical care is covered by the VA and Tricare - and I have Medicare. I just had my first cataract surgery and the VA covered 100% of the cost. Yes, I am retired USAF, 24 years. DW has BCBS of Texas through Texas A&M University (Retired) and Tricare - will get Medicare once she turns 65.
I don't know what folks do who have -0- health insurance. I know one of my medications is more than $600 a month. All of our meds combined would cost us $3000 a month and we certainly could not afford that.
Texas still has a "few" hospitals who treat folks who have no insurance but the care is very limited - life saving only. It really is a sad situation for folks who have no other choice. With as many folks as there are with RVs perhaps if everyone got together they could come up with their own health care sharing plan -anyone talked to Escapees?
