Wow, 20 pages! And I'm just now getting to this thread for the first time.
I had the louvered v-gate on my 1999 F350, moved it to my 2003 F350, moved it again to my 2005 F250. But it wouldn't fit this 2007 Dodge 3500 so it went with the tradein. I'm now using the stock tailgate because I'm too darn cheap to spring for a new louvered tailgate. We retired people have to be careful with our pennies, ya know.

Waldo,
You have provided us with a wonderful source of entertainment and I can only hope that your question was really answered. That said would the chrome louvers be more efficient at passing the air through than well waxed painted ones?

Charlie,
Are you really asking about chrome tailgates or is your question really addressing what kind of wax should be used on the louvered tailgates to reduce aerodynamic drag. Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Steve,
Tell us you read all 20 pages!
Save your money. As posted, the standard tail gate provides better fuel economy than the louvered tail get.
Heck - doesn't evey one know that?
Edited - The MOC admin is just waiting until one of their friends posts, then they will lock this thread. That way they tend to get the last word in.

Yeah we know that but look at all the fun we've had here
Bingo,
I was asking whether a chrome was better than a well waxed painted one. I was going to get into which was later but since you asked. Which one?

I think that a properly waxed chrome louvered tailgate would have less drag than a painted waxed louvered tailgate. But then as long as you weren't stuck in the desert a wax louvered tailgate would be acceptable also. Of course, if you were driving in the desert, chances are that the wax louvered tailgate would melt. If the waxed louvered tailgate had embedded diamonds, it could be a major expense that would probably not be covered by any warranty or extended warranty (ooops, I mean service plan). Wait, I think I am getting these threads mixed up again??????

Charlie, if you put primer paint on the chrome and then wipe it off before it dries it
will seal the pores in the chrome thus cutting down on drag, and giving you better
fuel economy and lift which will also give more speed to evade the speed traps from
Smokey!!!

I just found out louvered tailgates are directional and should only be installed with the small arrow on the left inside trim pointing toward the front of the vehicle. Failure to install correctly will result in a "lift" effect on the rear of the pickup and loss of traction on the rear tires. In some cases, trucks have been reported going airborne at the lower altitudes.

Will the snow get cloged in the loovers and then freeze so now they are too heavy and take more diesel so i think the guy with the 2x8 was rite but if he used a 2x6 he would have less drag yet and the cut in 100 1" holes to let the air out but at 50 mph the 2x6 will fail as it has toooooooooooooo many holes john

I'm thinking in the Winter you should probably de-ice those louvers each trip out.

Maybe a de-icer could be an added accessory. Wonder if I could get it in chrome?

Robbie, Would that de-icer be battery or solar driven?
