VA/WVA 522

How is this road, from Winchester VA to Hancock Maryland??

522, is it white knuckles with rig in tow, or a pretty drive??

Getting through or around Winchester is the toughest part, once you are out of town, it is a very relaxing trip (half four lane, half very straight two-lane) through rural farm-type areas of western Virginia with a couple of small communities on the way. Truckers use the route much as it sounds you are going to. There are several alternative ways to get to 522 from I-81. Route 37 at Bartonville to 522 is your best bet and completely bypasses the downtown area . The only white knuckle areas will be in Winchester itself if you decide to go through town.

What about VA 27 to go around Winchester? I have this on my return route in June.

Haven't been on that road? Is it off of I-81?

No wonder I am confused, your post said VA 27, but your map shows 37 which is the route that I originally said was the best way to avoid downtown, had me worried since I know a little about the area and didn't recognize the route??

Sorry about that: just a slip of the keyboard, and I overlooked that part of your post. I was thinking of the route I had worked out. So we are in agreement, and I'll be heading south over the same route that Carol and Al will follow north.

Route was fine, that 2 lane section, not really bad, but we were glad it was short.

Thanks again.

Padredw, not sure if you were planning on stopping at that campground,Candy Hill. We did not stop, but, it looked pretty nice via a drive by.

Carol,
Was it just the local traffic (Berkeley Springs?) or is the road in bad shape (I would not doubt it due to the truck traffic). I seem to remember a couple of quarries in that area and was wondering about wear and tear on the road. Always like to keep info like that in mind in case I happen to be in the area.

Bingo, road conditions were fine, I don't remember any real snots, errr, bumps, err, troubles. I would remember the looloos, eh?? A few rough spots, non issues.

Just the narrow roads, and they were not that bad.

Would have loved a pull off somewhere for our lunch! LOL Not one picnic area to be found!

Berkeley Springs was fine, I was ITCHING to stop, lovely state park, the library, have some research I know I could have dug up to do. Years ago, I stopped there for a meal, some tavern that served GOOD food, nope, do not remember name, RATS! LOL
