Off the ground.....

We moved back to Aransas Pass today. There is a Titanium fifth wheel across the street that has the wheels three inches off the ground. Never seen that before. No supports of any kind other than rear stabilizer jacks, front landing gear, and a king pin tripod. Wonder if the frame might sag? I would at least put jack stands under the frame between the wheels. Oh well, not my problem.

We see a lot of that with motorhomes. Instead of running the front wheels up on blocks, they just run their hydraulic levelers down and lift the front of the motorhome as much as 8 inches off the ground!

The manufacturer of the levelers says this is a no-no; the levelers aren't made to hold that much weight. They're just for leveling.

Has he said why they did that or is the ground that uneven?

He says the RV is very stable, no movement when you move around inside. And, he is right. I went over and helped him set up his DirecTV dish. The RV is as solid as a rock. What he did was drop the back stabilizer jacks down, then lift the whole rig with the landing jacks on the front. Maybe those are hydraulic, I'm not sure. He is a crane operator; runs a 125 ton crane, so perhaps he knows what he is doing. I still think it needs support near the axles.

You see that on a lot of heavy equipment for stability so the theory is good. However the frame and suspension on a RV does not compare with a 125 Tone crane. Don't think the OEM front jacks are rated for that kind of weight and the rear jacks certainly are not. Perhaps he as modified the RV to be able to do that.I would not try that without knowing more???

With our (SOB) which has all Hydraulic system (Jacks) and the side to side leveling system when we set down on our site I raise the 5er to get level from side to side and then front to rear. I also have the system raised to take the pressure off the tires and it gives more stability to the 5er and no need for king pin jack or unless the site is really unlevel I don't use the Roto Choks. I'm really impressed with the Hydraulic system and with the 15" frame I don't work about the frame system. And I now carry no plastic blocks or wooden boards. GBY...
