Scrolling Left to Right

I have noticed and I am sure there are others, that often while reading a post are forced to have to scroll Left to Right in order to read the text.
While I do realize an extra long URL will cause this scrolling the biggest culprit is graphics/photos. Whether it be a large single pic or multiple pics, anything over 600 pixels wide will cause this problem to any reader with a smaller screen resolution.

While not mentioning any names I have found a number of examples...
  • 2 pics each 500 pixels wide for a total width of 1000
  • 1 pic 448 pixels, 2 maps, 1 at 329 pxls, 1 at 271 pxls totaling 1039 pixels
  • 1 photo of 654
For examples 1 and 2 simply Stack the graphics instead of side by side.
For example 3 the graphic should be reduced to 600 pixels wide.
    There are many more examples.
While all of the above will appear fine at a Screen Resolutin of 1152 or higher, anyone using a lesser Screen Resolution such as 640 x 480 or 800 X 600 will have to scroll left to right to view these graphics but worse yet is any of the 640 x 480 or 800 X 600 will have to scroll left to right each time they read a sentence in it's entirety.

At this point everything you are reading here appears as it should with no left to right scrolling BUT if there is a reply posted with the examples mentioned above you will no longer be able to read this lengthy post without scrolling left to right to read each and every word in the sentence.

BTW- I only just started noticing this since in the past week I have been using my daughter's 'puter with a screen resolution of 800 X 600. My own 'puter is set at a much higher resolution and therefore everything seems fine.

Another BTW-As I do run a much higher screen resolution on my home computer this left to right scrolling does not effect me one bit but it DOES effect any MOCer using 640, 800, and even 1024 pixels wide and it is for their sake that you should try to correct this annoyance.

One more BTW-If any of you have a photo or graphic that you would like reduced DO NOT hesitate sending me a PM or Email. I'll be happy to help.

Glenn,

We do try to watch for these situations and will correct them if found. The problem is we do not read each and every post or thread. When you (or anyone) finds one of these problems please alert the MODs and Admin so the situation can be corrected.

Thank you.

Interesting concept!

I took a look at the ones in my signature and I will need to make a change. I hadn't thought of that but I was wondering what was causing the left to right scrolling. However, when looking at it today my signature didn’t appear to be causing any left to right scrolling. I use two monitors. One is set up for 600 X 800 viewing and the other is set for 1024 X 768.

I thought at one time I seen a setting on the forum for an adjustment on the text size. Would this also cause that if it was set on a larger font? I'm unable to find anything like that now. The next time I see that I will have to scroll left to right to read the text I will investigate what you have mentioned.

Thanks for the tip!

On edit: When I view this posting on 1024 X 768 monitor; in my signature I have all three pictures side by side. When I move it over to the 600 X 800 screen the last picture automatically jumps to the next line. On my computer screen it doesn’t seem to cause left to right scrolling. I went ahead and made a change in my signature settings.

Bill N Donna,

Your sig line was not causing a scroll. But thank you for your efforts.

Having larger or smaller text does not cause scrolling.

This is interesting. I've never had to scroll left or right to view the page. Nice to know though.

Thanks for the information. I have noticed some long URL's that have caused the scrolling, but in most cases the ADMIN's have caught it.

We probably all need to read:
Formatting Your Text Using Forum Code
It tells us how to format a URL correctly for easy viewing and posting.

For those that are blind like me, if you need to increase the size of your font when you are reading, just hold down the CTRL key and press the "+" (plus) key until you are comfortable with the reading size.

If you are using Internet Explorer you will have to scroll left to right using the CTRL+. If using Firefox, everything stays on screen and gets as big as you want it. Safari works basically the same as Firefox.

Happy surfing.

RVW,
I know you all do and I know you will correct them. I also know that it's not an easy job keeping up with every post. From here on I will advise you when ever I see a problem.
Thanks for the response.
