Sat receiver question

Hopefully, I will get this figured out and stop driving all of you crazy about it.
Can I just swap the card in my receiver I'm using in my stick home, to the identical receiver (unused spare) I will be placing in our Montana???
If this doesn't work, I have made up my mind I will have the unused one activated for a bedroom, and use it.
Thanks, Ozz

Ozz ... I'm not sure what will happen there as when you initially activate your subscription, they ask for the serial number off the receiver itself as well as the number off your card. After work, I'll swap cards in my receivers and see if they still work ... or someone else that knows will beat me to it. With my luck, I'd get some static electricity surge in the process of house to camper and fry my card!

The answer is NO !! The card is receiver specific. we take the stick house bedroom receiver with us - use push on antenna cables for a quick disconnect/reconnect.

I hate to have to disagree, but with our old Dish Network setup we could switch the card and it worked fine. We cannot do the same with our Direct TV setup. We have 3 receivers, one we purposely set up without a phone line. We use that receiver in the RV too.

Try your spare receiver while you're at home Ozz, then you'll know.

But I will try.

Or you could call the provider and ask if the card will work in another receiver.

Ozz,

If you try it, please post the results.

If it does work, I may be inclined to swap cards occassionally with one in the stick house instesd of the whole receiver. I'm just curious if it's the card that retains the updates and PPV costs or the receiver itself. I know I left an active one in the RV for the winter and it wouldn't work in the spring until I brought it in and connected to a phone line to prompt security updates.

Also - whenever I swap receivers with the RV I have to run check switch to get it to recognize the Dish 300 in the RV versus the Dish 500 in the house. The 300 can only fix on one satellite at a time.

Skip, I could, but that may limit my options later on.

If it is a Direct TV system it will not because they are linked to the receiver you tell them. You can call them and they will send you another card for your other box.

Van Man has it correct.....the card is receiver specific. Fact is, Dish Network periodically mails out a new card for each receiver and disables the old card. You have X amount of days to contact them and get the new card activated before they shut your receiver off. Experience speaking!!!!

You can not swap cards in the dirctv system. You could a long time ago but no more., And you do have to go through the setup procedure if you have a different dish at home than the camper..IE Round vs Oval. You should have the same set up in the home as in the camper. Note that it is not necessary to have the phone line connected to order pay-per-view as you can do that via a phone or cell phone or on line. The phone line IS used for troubleshooting however we have a receiver that has never been connected to a phone line in..I mean years.. Also from time to time Directv will send you a new card for your receiver..It is a way for them to combat card hackers. The receiver that has been in the Montana since May is listed with Directv as being in.."The family room"

Ozz ... swapped out the card from the RV receiver to the one in the house. You won't have to worry about static disharge because as I figured, you'll get a message on screen that says you've inserted the wrong card. $5 a month for the second receiver isn't bad. As far as letting them know it's in the fiver ... never done it in 9 years and I've had no problems with Direct TV reception. As far as PPV ... I've never seen the need to use the feature so I can't comment on that. For their records, it's in my basement bedroom. One thing I might mention ... if you leave the receiver in the fiver over the winter, when you start traveling again in the spring, you'll more than likely have to give Direct TV a call and have them reset it. Seems if you don't use it for a few months, they deactivate the signal somehow. Just call them up and follow the instructions concerning no reception. You can just do it all on the phone without talking to a real person.

Thanks so much for the input Rich and Dieselguy.
We winterized the pool and brought in Sue's plants today, finishing the multitude of last day's items preparing to exit the area. Hopefully, tomorrow we will make the dreaded call to Direct Tv, I have Sue do it, my patience is just too short in supply, to deal with people in call centers on the phone. I end up banging the receiver on the desk after 10 minutes or so. Got to learn some Yogurt from Wrenchtraveller.
