Montana 2006 2980 RL spare tire

How do you lower the spare tire in order to use it.

You should have a crank handle in the storage compartment. There should be a shaft on the side under the trailer beside the spare. Put the crank handle on the shaft and crank it down (usually counter clockwise)to the ground. Make sure you keep tension on the cable when you raise it back up or the cable will get tangled in the pulley.

As you have a 2006 model, the crank used for the rear stabilizers is the same crank used for the spare tire. The end of the shaft is on the curb side of the RV. The assembly has been known to come loose so a periodic check for tightness is a good idea. Some folks have added a tie-down strap around the tire and frame to ensure it doesn't come loose.

You can also uses a 3/4" socket on the end of a drill bit for really quick lowering and raising the rear stabilizers, too. It helps make things go pretty quick. I do use the wrench to first loosen then use the drill/socket to finish the movement at a faster speed. Putting things back, I use the drill/socket to raise the wheel, then tighten things down with the wrench. Same for the stabilizers. Just so nothing is over or under torqued.

Carl, I'm assuming that you mean the crank handle and not the crank rod itself when you say it's the same as the rear stabilizer crank! We have a 2004 2980 and the spare tire crank rod is between the rear tire and the stabilizer crank shaft on the curbside and you are correct in saying to check it every so often because it does have a tendency to loosen up over time! I've had my spare swing a little before tightening the cable via the shaft! I do go under and spray the shaft and the mechanism with some silicone spray just to keep it lubed and easy to move if needed!
