Cure for hydraulic slide problems in old Montana's
If you own an older Monty here's some information about slide problems and how to overcome them.
The hydraulic slides (2) in my 2002 3655FL Monty were not working correctly on retract.
1. The motor runs fine (not the breaker problem that many have).
2. Fluid level is up (unlike low level problems that some had).
3. Batteries are new and completely charged.
4. Mechanical parts/gears, etc., are clean and well lubed.
The problem panned out to be in a valving system that is no longer used on our Montys.
On the older models (around 2002) Lippert used their "1st generation" UNIDIRECTIONAL motor/pump assembly that relies on two solenoid actuated cartridge valves to control the direction of hydraulic fluid (not the BIDIRECTIONAL motor now used - the newer models do not use valves because the motor runs in forward or reverse).
The solenoid valves on the older models were made by HydraForce and worked well (until they're about 8 yrs old when they finally wear out) plus there is no manual overide on them or on the electric motor. That means no way to retract slides if the system malfunctions (that I know of).
I discovered that you cannot buy replacement parts (cartridge valves) for this old timer's hydraulic power unit. The fix is to buy the $999.95 replacement hydraulic power unit (motor, trombetta switch, pump and reservoir) which is now being used in the newer Montana's. The good news is that this new unit is completely compatable with the old actuating cylinders, hydraulic lines and fittings, and operator switch (according to Lippert).
Once I get the new assembly and replace it I'll be caught up with the rest of you and start learning all the new problems that need solved.
....dan (a little less money and a little more knowedge)
