Water Heater Problem?
While I was doing the annual flush on the water heater the gunk that came out included some blue glass like material. I am assuming that the tank lining has cracked. Does anyone know what the base material is under this glass and should the unit be replaced without delay?
I found a replacement for under $400 and the unit is 8 years old, so I think I got my moneys worth.
Thanks in advance!

The steel tank is lined with blue porcelain. Sounds like it has cracked and needs to be replaced.

Sounds like the heater is "singing the blues". Sorry...

I spoke with the factory customer service department at Suburban. I guess it is a case of CYA as they were of no help. Said that some water heaters last 3 years while others last 10 years, all considered normal. Water quality determines longevity along with annual anode replacement. The blue glass material is the lining, but the tank could go for quite a while longer. The actual tank is made of metal. When asked what kind of metal, they did not know except to say it is black metal. Bottom line, not a positive sign and will plan on replacement during this winter. Don't want to wake up to a mess on a camp trip.

There is a check valve on the water heater that is probably plugged and/or broken. I just replaced mine last week because of the same thing. It is evidently a common problem.
Edit - It is the top line coming out of the rear of the heater.

Dave, what Lonnie said. Many of us here have had that happen. The checkvalve is screwed into the water heater and the input (or is it output, I forget) line screws into the checkvalve.
There are a couple of different sizes of that checkvalve so take the old one with you. Many RV dealers carry them in stock. They sell that many of them.
Also, they come in both plastic and bronze. Bronze is more expensive but lasts longer. It's been awhile but several years ago the plastic one was about $5 and the bronze one a couple of years ago was about $15. But I think that price varies dealer to dealer.
Good luck.

Dave, I think Lonnie and Steve are right on. Ozz posted a slide show of this problem some time back and I kept the link. I don't think Ozz would mind me passing it on. http://s112.photobucket.com/albums/n...t=eec8b710.pbw
Hope it helps, Jim
