My Turn for a tire blow out

Well, it's finally my turn. I got to change it in the middle of traffic as there was no shoulder. Lots of damage of course,,,,, so I have heard of others who have upgraded to 17.5 inch wheels with 215/75/17 tires which allow you to buy a much better quality tire. I understand the overall tire would be 2/10 of an inch smaller
Mine were Goodyear Marathons built in the 25 week of 2008 with around 15,000 miles on them

Has anyone done this upgrade.

I upgraded to the Goodyear RST G614 tires Load range G. A much heavier tire than the St 235/80/16. If your rims are rated for 110 psi, there is no need to change rim size. I am assuming your current rim size is 16 in.

Wschep: There has been a lot of conversation here on upgrading the Goodyear Marathons if they were made in china to a better tire. You need to look at the inside strut of one of your rims and see if they are rated for 80psi or 110psi. If 80psi, one of the tires recommended by a member in the tire business (LonnieB) is the Bridgestone Duravis LT 235/85R. Others like the Goodrich Commercial TA. If able to go to 110psi, the G614. This is an active topic and a search for tires in the "general discussion about our Montanas" forum will get you a lot of information that was very useful to me.

The advice about staying with the wheel size will save you money, I got an update on my 80# rated to the 110# rating from the wheel company, here is the e-mail I got from Treadit:
Jim,
If you would be so kind as to email me your address I can send you a letter and stickers for you to affix to the backside of your wheels indicating the re-rated weight and tire pressure.
Thank you and have a great day!

On my 2008 Monty, when the tire was unmounted from the rim, the sticker was on the inside of the rim. Stands to reason that if you stick it on the outside somewhere it is going to get grubby and possibly come off. The sticker changed the rim rating from 80 psi, which is embossed inside the rim, to the 110 psi by keystone specks.

Good luck.

Good job Jack!
I complained to the Mission tire failure deal, they were to send me my $$, never did, I got tired of asking.
I got replacment tires...whopeee. Those will be replaced as well. But no $$ for the tire changer.

Well, I took the advise and called Tredit to rerate my wheels. The said they will NOT allow me to rerate them and I would have to stay with 80 PSI. So I will be buying 17.5 wheels. You have to experience changing a tire in the middle of traffic with no shoulder to pull off to, on the drivers side "my butt on the yellow line" to realize I don't care what it cost I just want the best solution possible.
Thanks for your input

My trailer was built in September of 2008

My wheels are stamped 60-80 and have a stamping of 3500#

I am not sure of the persons name. I will call back and ask for Jennifer

I believe the 3500 pound rims are the ones that they recertified to 110 psi. May be worth an e-mail to get something in writing versus a phone call. Hope it works out, it can save some money big time.

They bought all four. The last one which I replaced in Ar. cost me $78 pro rated ( their price for the new one was $182). I put 3400 mi. on it so when they put on the g-614s I keep two of them and I had 2 tocoma tires left from my other trailer so I sold the 4 for $100 and didn't have to pay the disposal fee we have here. The guys name in Dayton is Steve Booth. Good Luck they know they have a problem w/that tire. Jack

Hope it wasn't snowing like in your pic when it happened!
Rather than go to the 17.5s, consider just going with the BFG Commercial T/A in 235/85 16. Or is that not enough load cap. for your trailer?
I'm having my new High Country fitted with these before I bring it home. Haven't heard a single bad thing or problem with these tires.
Good luck whatever your decision...

I went with the BF Goodrich commercial TA's and I'm still well within the weight range. I'm surprised that Tredit won't rerate the rims since at the last rally, they were giving out stickers and letters stating that the rims were rerated for 110#. I wonder if they changed their minds.

Last year I replaced my Missions with G 614's. The Goodyear dealer gave me $120 credit for the Missions on trade. Very glad to get that & rid of the Missions!

?? Is the rim that the spare is on the same quality as the four on the ground of a new (2011 - 3580RL) trailer ??
Reason: can I pull the spare and break it down to see the weight load ? Will it state the weight or will it be in code ?
THANKS....I only have 700 miles plus the delivery mileage from Indiana to Dallas on these China bombs....put we may just use our IRS donation to replace them now......why wait for damage to happen...

Thanks for all your in-sight....

Joe, on my 5er, the spare is a spoke wheel, (steel) There should be a sticker on the inside (not street-side) of the wheel, you can see them by laying under the trailer. At least on my old '07.

I believe the President of the MOMC (Montana Owners Modification Club)is correct, both of our spares (2007, 2011) have been 110 psi steel rims.
