We bought a Magic Chef at Lowe's when it was on sale for $149.00. It makes 12 cubes every 7 minutes, and 33# per day. We just set it on the kitchen counter, and when we hit the road, we just set it down on the floor next to the stove. It works great.

I have the exact same machine as Bob. I bought one and liked it so much I bought another for the patio at home. You can also purchase the ice maker for a lot less on www.homedepot.com as well.

Have had this model from Camping World for about a year now:
http://www.campingworld.com/browse/s...27399&src=SRQB. As others have stated, we like it so much we use it at home when not in the camper. We sit it in the floor next to the 3400RL counter by the dining area so it is not in the way too much. Thought about under counter installation, but the width prevents a one door installation.

I found this one at CW for $169 online purchase. Just bought one, hoping the results are as great as customer reviews predict.

We bought the same one simonsrf just bought and it works great! We tried it out in the house so we could check out the 3 different size cubes. We've sorta settled on the small size. We took on our maiden voyage, had it in the basement, plugged in down there. It ran like a champ and when we wanted ice, just lifted the "laundry chute". bcinwv, might have to try ours at the end of the counter!
We use alot of ice and, when fulltiming, this will save us precious freezer space.

Cando,
Actually ours is sitting directly in front of the dinette (kind of in the way) around from the end of the counter. Couldn't put it at the end of the counter because of the heating vent there. Oh well, I guess when our shins get sore enough, we will learn to walk around it. We justified the cost by analyzing our bagged ice usage when camping (have to preserve freezer space for ice cream Ha!!). and even with extended service plan, the ice-maker will pay for itself in less than two years. I actually liked your placement idea until I remembered that we weren't lucky enough to have the later model with the outlet in the basement.

We bought one of the portables at Costco. They were priced about $140. We also leave ours in the basement storage area and used a board between the wall of the storage and the rubber feet on the unit to make sure air can circulate around the cooling fins. The unit works great unless the outside temp gets too high.

Glad to see you started this thread. We just purchased an Avanti 3.2 upright freezer, and intend to purchase an ice maker next. We fish quite a bit, and ice expense adds up over the month. I like the stainless model at Camping World from what I've seen on line, but we're a ways from one of their stores now, so we may look at one at Home Depot or Lowe's.

Will,
We do lots of dry camping. We also have a 3.2 Avanti, and we have found that we use lots of solar energy trying to keep the freezer going. We purchased a digital temperatrue monitor that we place in the freezer so we can see the temp without opening the freezer door.
We hope that with the purchase of the ice maker, we'll be able to move the contents of the Avanti freezer (at times) to the freezer in the refrigerator and save Ah on our solar. Ice making has always taken up lots of room in both freezers.

We have been looking for an ice maker too. Look at the ones at CW in Nashville but just couldn't pull the trigger and make the buy. I had some reservations about the quality of the machine in question and where to sit one while in use. This string has helped a lot. Thanks guys.

I looked at the models camping world had then went with the magic chef model at home depot. The Home Depot model is bigger than the smallest camping world portable. The home depot model and the camping world standard model are the same size. The only difference I could find in the two...
1. Home Depot $199.00 with free shipping from homedepot.com.
Camping World $269.00 at the store.
2. The Home Depot has the Magic Chef sticker on the front.
The Camping world model has the same oval where the magic chef sticker goes but its not on their model.
I keep mine on the table outside with my table griddle and charcoal grill. I wait for it to fill up and dump it in a plastic container for the freezer.
I hope this helps.
Phil

I might be buying one in the next 2 weeks from a weekend camper that only used it a few times. If I decide to buy it I will store it in my basement storage area and use it outside to make ice when I have company over. I'll be paying $75 for it which seems to be a good price comparing it with the new ones I've looked at. I forgot the name of it, but I'll post back when/if I buy it. I need to remove everything from my storage compartment and make sure there is accessible room to store it before i purchase it.

I wish the portable icemakers had been available in 2001 when I wanted an icemaker for my RV. I ended up buying a Uline undercounter unit that made 20lbs a day and had a 12lb bin. I have also used it at times as a temp freezer for one or two small items. When traveling I use my inverter so the unit is running and the ice is not wet at the end of the day. I have reinstalled it in two RVs since then and it has more than paid for itself. If you use a lot of ice, it is well worth the convenience.

Well, I ended up getting a Sunpentown Model IM-101 portable, Weighs about 47 lbs. makes 35lbs a day, makes small, medium and large cubes, auto clean function, 18 hour timer, set for morning and go to bed and wake up and Voila - ICE. It does not have storage capability so ice must be removed once made, however it makes ice in about 7 minutes. Good looking unit also.
Web site www.sunpentown.com
The real test will be how it performs on the road after riding in the Monty. 1 year warranty also, but have to pay shipping back to CA. Oh well, give a little, get a little. Oh BTW $199.00 plus shipping.
BTW: The $199.00 was from E-Bay....

Was in Home depot two days ago and on sale was the Chef Magic at 149.00. They are all basic the same. We have one and love it. It sits in the basment and by the time I'm set up the good stuff can flow.

Wow Phil and Cathy,
With that kind of output, you can make ice for us when we see you in Washington...
Let's see 35#'s per day, times 7 would only be 245#'s per week. Hope you can get by...don't forget, ice is heavy!
