Fire Exits

Is it practical to get out the bedroom window? How do you get to the ground? If the kitchen catches on fire do you have a plan?

I haven't tried it. But you can bet if the kitchen area is on fire I will find a way even if it is head first.

You can get out of the bedroom window. You fall to the ground. IMO we are pretty much screwed if one of these catches on fire while we are in it. We have seen 5th wheels go up and it is not a pretty sight. The plan is get the ***** out any way you can. Save nothing but your butt.

That's why we have a large fire extinguisher in the bedroom.

Those escape ladders are a good idea but they are designed for the home and to attach to a window sill. Rv's do not have window sills. By the time you got that out and somehow hooked up you would be cindered. We also keep a big fire extinguisher in the bedroom. Just get out.. One went up when we were wintering in Az and it was a Montana. Fire started in the front bedroom. It was on Tv and the entire front was engulfed in flame. In like a couple of mins the entire unit was engulfed.

Go to Mor/Ryde web site look for escape ladders. They are designed for 5th wheels.

But don't work on most Monty's due to window placement. We took a home ladder, cut it down and attached it to a wooden closet rod wide enough to bridge the window frame. Cut a broomstick long enough to hold the window open and have three fire extinguishers in the bedroom that we can spray on the fire or on ourselves. Hope we never get a chance to use it.

We picked the 3750 because of two doors. That said I know for a fact, I can't get out any fire exit. I will die with head out the window, butt in trailer. If the sheer animal flight takes over and I make it to the ground, I die from "blunt force trauma" to my head from fall! Pic your poison! Ladder idea, novel at best. Like building an IKEA entertainment center, in my opinion....

Best bet is to have at least 2 extinguishers, 1 in front, and 1 in rear of trailer. Know how to use them! Also preplan now for how you would climb out bedroom window, feet first or head first. Check out this site. http://www.macthefireguy.com/

Feet first for me. I would just throw Helen out the window. When I drove school bus for the disabled we had fire drills twice a year. One disabled person in a big motorized wheel chair asked me how I would get him out of the bus if it was afire.. I said I would put that thing in high gear and drive him out the back door and I meant it. He considered the options and asked if he could go first.

I go out over the dresser feet first, hang off the side by my hands, and nimbly drop the short distance to the ground. Wife drops out any pets, I catch them. Wife climbs out any way she can and lets go, I adapt and catch her as best I can.

....she then rushes me to Hospital Emergency Room to treat crushed vertebrae and ruptured spleen.

We were just teaching our 7 year old how to use the rear fire exit on the 338 today. His Nana came over to see it and he was proud of the fact that he could show her the fire exit all by himself and make it work. His concern is the same about height but I told him to just jump if you have to and make it outside don't worry about it.

As any fireman will tell you, just GET OUT. Forget the fire extinquisher (unless it is a grease fire on the stove, or the toaster is on fire), let the fire dept. handle it. When I ran high rise buildings, the fire dept. told me NEVER try to use the fire hoses (even told us to get rid of them) because they don't want to have to fight the fire AND rescue people at the same time.

It is amazing how the mind and body will work together when flames are licking at your a--. As for getting rid of the fire hoses in that high rise would be aganist the fire or building codes. In my time as a firefighter we replaced the hose with our own as dependability as to condition and relaibility of the hose.

It is a good thing exiting your RV when it is on fire is not about 'grace' but more about life saving because I don't think anyone would be able to do it with style! I think it is going to be about grabbing my 8 year old and flinging him out the nearest window. When we went to the Q Rally in 2013 they had the firefighter, sorry I can't remember his name, do a presentation which was enough to scare the life out of any mother. I immediately made my husband purchase SIX of the new type of fire extinguishers so we could we ourselves down to exit the RV and he bought the halon (is that the right term) for the refrigerator compartment to stop a fire in that area. I feel safer with those mods but would love it if they would make the exits the appropriate size for an actual human being!

Fire extinguishers need to be serviced. On our big pleasure boat it was a yearly trip to have them re-certified. In the mid 1980s a friend of mine was killed by fire extinguisher when it blew up in his face! Reminds me to service my two units in Dually ! Also best train everyone of how to use them!
