Spare Tire Holder/Storage
Had to remove the spare the other week and it came down no problem but now when I want to replace the spare, the holding device/cable doesn't want to come down when I attempt to crank it down. Of course there's no weight on the cable. Is there a trick to this or should I get under the rig and pull on the cable while having someone else crank it down? I don't want to bugger the mechanism.
Thanks.

Are you saying you dropped the spare tire, and then cranked the cable back up unloaded? If so, you may have jammed the cable feed. Not sure what you do at that point. The case is plastic, so I would not put too much stress trying to get the cable back out, breaking the plastic.

I had to get under the trailer and apply some pressure to the mechanism to get it to lower...if there is a trick to it, don't know what it is.

I hate those crank down tire holders. I removed my spare and mounted it inside my storage compartment. If/when I ever need the spare it will be clean and dry, and very easy to get to. Now if I could only do the same with the one under my pickup truck!

Sorry to say but the cable wraps around a plastic device when you crank it up or down. With age they get brittle and break. Somewhere on the forum you can get the company who builds them. They are between 40-60 dollars. Or you can go to a junk yard and get one off a pickup. I think they are made by the same people.

A downside to your fix is that you lose some valuable storage space, but if that is not an issue for you, then it is definitely easier than having to crawl under the trailer to haul the spare out for use!

Sort of on topic...I use a drill motor with a socket attachment to lower and raise the spare tire.

We did the same thing to raise and lower stabilizers on a previous TT.

I had the same thing happen to me just before I traded the previous Monty. Had a blow out on the interstate and it was pouring down the rain; threw the bad tire in the back of the truck and just cranked it up. I had to take it to a local machine shop and get them to un-jam the cable. Unfortunately, I had no idea that would cause a problem. Hope it works out better for you than it did for us.

Last weekend I had a blowout on my trailer and went under and removed the spare with not problem whatsoever. However, once I removed the tire I noticed the cable recoiled back up and I thought it was spring loaded. After reading everyones points, I think I am in for a surprise when I get a new tire and replace my spare.

Speaking of spare tires, I heard of 2 problems, one, a stolen spare, another problem was the spare tire attachment system broke and the spare tire dropped, flipped back and raised the rear of the trailer as it was moving down the highway... Two things I don''t care to endure, so I installed a ratcheting strap on mine and that sucka is tight!
I am under no illusion that it will actually come apart, so I keep a spare strap. I will have to cut it. (Just like a thief would do.. but at least it might slow them down.)

Those things are a giant pita both on the truck and the trailer. In my case, however, storing it in the basement isn't an option. I couldn't store a spare bicycle tube under there if it was still in the box.

X2 ... Added to the "to do" list!
Knife, to cut the strap (if need arises) is always available.

Two more problems I see by putting the tire in the storeage area. Not only do you bring the weight to the front from the rear, you also now have put more weight on one side of the unit. Not only that, the tongue weight has changed. May not be a biggie, but something to be aware of.

Just moved mine to the basement. Going deer hunting this week and was afraid the spare would drag going into the place we go. I also removed the three step stairs which has already dragged going into parking lots and put a two step stair in its place. It raised the stair while retracted over 8". Since I carry a 200cc motorcylce on the rear of the 2955 I am not concerned about the weight change moving the spare forward.
