We tow the same RV with a 18 Ram 3500 Megacab Longhorn CTD 4x4, HD towing and B&W companion. Love it! It is also used as a daily driver sometimes.

Ram: You get that excellent Cummins engine - unfortunately it is in a Ram truck.
Ford: You get that excellent Ford Truck - Unfortunately it comes with the Ford Diesel.
Chevy and GMC: Great engine and Tranny and a great truck. Just buy one!

Expert advice... Decision made!
I dont like the GM bodystyle. Unfortunately..

The Cummins has to create that same power and torque thru those 6 meaning each piston, rod, and cylinder is hit with more force and it has to be built bigger and stronger to withstand it. Think how big they would be if there were only one cylinder.

Actually the cummins always had these large pistons and rods. Its Ford and Gm who need to play catch up with the BIG SIX..

GM and Ford have nothing to catch up on.They are great vehicles as well as the Dodge.
The piston comment you speak of is common sense.Less cylinders bigger bore!

Every thing about any new vehicle is computer controlled. You turn the key to start you are just telling the computer to start it. Push the gas pedal you are telling the computer you would like to speed up. The computer then does what you ask it to do.

HD trucks don't have electronic power steering. It is hydraulic. Some do have though, the Digital Steering Assist RPO code NV8. If there is a failure of the system’ it will act like normal power steering. Don’t worry, Ram and Ford aren’t far behind.

Unfortunately everything depends on the computer in these new vehicles. No way around it unless you own or buy used about 20 yrs old.

Fortunately everything on these new vehicles depends on one of the computers. Remember when we worked on our vehicles all the time. Now thanks to the computers we rarely work on them. The only problem when they break we can’t fix them anymore.

The computer technology imbedded today gives our vehicles a lot more power with better mileage, lower emissions and make them a lot safer. Our rigs today are significantly more reliable than they used to be and in many cases the computer will tell use what is wrong with it when there is a problem. No need to go back to the 20th century.

That also can work against us in the sense that when they fail it costs a lot to fix and causes lots of issues vecause of the special tools (computers) needed to diagnose or repair them.

I have a 2016 F350 and I am in IT working with computers everyday, worries me when something happens just how bad the situation could get

I just towed first time with my 3402rl. At 16000 the 2017 RAM 3500 SRW pulled like a freight train and as smooth as a Cadillac ! Long bed and I added firestone air bags, with a B&W hitch.

Update on the new truck. Just returned from our extended trip - Central New York State to Myrtle Beach, return home for 3 days, then to Dayton Ohio and then return home. We were impressed with how much quieter and smoother the truck was both solo and towing. Mileage to Myrtle was about 10.5 thru the PA mountains. Older truck averaged just a bit less at just above 10. Over to Dayton mileage improved with the flatter terrain to above 11. Driving solo on I-70 into Indiana and back we hit 22.6 (cruise set at 71). I'm impressed as my 2012 would not get above 19. Just at 5000 miles and only beginning to break in

They all just keep getting better even when you think they are as good as they can get. I’m afraid to drive one of the new ones, I’d haft to have it.

I've been told that Ford now owns Cummins. How long before Ram will have some other kind of power plant and Ford will have Cummins in their vehicles?

This is urban legend. Ford does not own Cummings. This has been spread for at least 10 years probably more.
Google Does Ford own Cummings
