Cody Wyoming to I 25 east

I was wondering what the drive is like from Cody east to I 25, or if it’s better to go to I 90 east. Headed from Ohio to Rushmore, then down to Yellowstone, then back home, and would like to come back home via I 25 to I 80, as were going out via I 90 so would be nice to see different scenery on the way home, but wasn’t sure what it’s like getting to the highway from Cody. Thank you.

I travel this area every year or two (and have for 12 years now). Either highway 14 or 16 will work. Do not take 14A unless you really want to test yourself with mountain driving and have a VERY good tow vehicle. (The Mountainous driving book calls this the 'Oh My God' road) Both 14 and 16 are mountainous roads, but no super steep and winding stuff. Now, there ARE hills and curves in all mountainous roads, so be prepared for that.
14 is also called the Shell Canyon and has a beautiful visitor site overlooking a steep narrow waterfall area. There is a pretty large parking area at this point. And both roads will take you to at least 9000 feet. We try to camp in that area whenever we can, but no hookups and we can only make it one night before the batteries go. We had ice over the mud puddles one time in July or August, so it gets chilly - but I love it. My favorite place to go. I will correct myself, there are some campgrounds that have at least electric, but I think the NFS sites aren't real long.
Enjoy the drive.

I like Tom and Gail''s suggestion..and get on I-90.especially if not in a rush, and want to see Rushmore ...Also in the neghborhood is Devil''s Tower for "close encountersof the third kind".
Much better route than fighting I-25 down to I-80 imho.
Safe travels.
