One more tire question
Since the Goodyear Marathons I cancelled from Camping World were made in China, I checked with an independent dealer. He suggested Carlisle ST235/80R/16 or Kelly LT215/85/16, both American made. He said the BF Goodrich T/A's may not have enough clearance. Both the Carlisle and Kelly are $118.00 mounted and balanced. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions on these. Thanks

The LT215/85R16 is only rated for 2880 pounds at 80 psi. If clearance is an issue with the BFG Commercial TA size LT235/85R16 and you want the BFG, change size to LT245/75R16. It has the same load capacity as the LT235/85R16, 3042 pounds at 80 psi. The height will be the same as the ST235/80R16 but the width will be 10mm (just under 1/2 inch) wider.

Thanks Lonnie. What do you think of the Carlisle? Any experience of opinion?

Our Big Sky came with Carlisle's. After two flats and sidewall failure on all four, we replaced them. Good luck.

I don't have much experience with the Carlisle ST rated tires. I do have a lot of experience with other types of tires they produce though. Their agricultural implement tires aren't too good, they have caused me some grief and many apologies to angry farmers. I quit selling them. Their ATV and Lawn & Garden tires seem to be excellent though, I sell lots of them and use them myself. Going by the experience rames14 had with the ST rated tires, and the experiences of others I have read or heard about, the quality of their ST tires may not be much better than their implement tires.
If you are wanting to stay with ST rated tires, the Maxxis M8008 has the best track record. It's the only ST I have any confidence in, and the only ST rated tire I will recommend.

I would never use Carlisle tires again based on my previous experience with them. Most of the ones I had blew out or had to be replaced due to bubbles forming on the sidewalls.

I do have some experience with Carlisle tires. I put a set of 15" LRE's in my trailer feeling that an increase of load range over what the factory used would be sufficient for my travels. I chose Carlisle because they were the ONLY 15" LRE tires I could find. Well, as I posted, after blowouts & flats-I trashed them in favor of 16" wheels and LT tires (both of which are USA made). I just regret not doing that before instead of wasting my money on the Carlisles.
Quite frankly, I prefer not to buy anything Chinese anymore.

TLG, Many of us are having good luck with the Goodyear G614RST's. A little pricey but available at Sam's Club for $215.00 each, which is where I bought mine. Had to have them installed at an RV dealer as they were not equipped to handle the trailer mounting.

TLG, I put on the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A's LT 235/85R16 on our 329RLT. There is no problem with the clearance.

I’m the new guy on the block so who’s going to listen to me, right?
Well I own a keystone fiver within 50# of your 14,035# GVWR and in my opinion you need to stick with the load capacity tires that came on your trailer. Going to a tire with a load capacity of 3042# is not a safe thing to do with your GAW potential. No responsible tire dealer would sell them to you either because they do not want to violate the DOT recommendations for replacement tires.

I think something some are missing is a thing called the safety factor. Gross weights can be exceeded fairly easily. I am a case in point, I have discussed this before and it need not be dicussed again. Keep in mind, every time you hit a bump in the road you increase the load on the tires, this is a given. Curbs get hit ocassionally and increase the load on the tires. I would rather be well under on my tires capability than at the upper limit. This is just my opinion, I spent many years in aviation not to be aware of increasing loads. Having said all this, it is an individuals choice as to what tires to ride on, I just hope they keep safety in mind as they are not the only ones on the road when that tire seperates. Safe travels to everyone!!!!!

We have the Goodyear G614's on this Montana but the original poster is towing a Mountaineer which probably is lighter than what we're towing. The G614's are load range G and while would do a good job it might be more expense than is necessary for that model.
Assuming the weight falls within the proper range, I'd consider the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A in load range E. After many problems with Goodyear Marathon tires on our prior Montana we swapped them out for a set of the Commercial T/A tires. We only put 9,000 miles on those tires before trading the fifthwheel but they were trouble free and tire wear appeared excellent. That's not a lot of miles but if I were looking for a LR E tire I'd serious consider the Commercial T/A.

FastEagle-- Tell us the difference between an ST and an LT! You seem to be quoting DOT all the time, what is the difference between these to tire types?
You haven't told us what you tow with or what you tow either! I see you are "Trading UP"-- from what? Inquiring minds want to know!!
Sorry, I'll turn it back to the original question on tires!

I will take my chances with commercial T/A's. What has DOT done about the exploding tires from china? Nothing. That tells me what I need to know about DOT. I value the experience of Lonnie and others on this forum much more than I would ever trust DOT. You can stamp whatever you want on a tire evidently (Missions for example). Doesn't mean a thing if it is made in China.

Fast Eagle is a tire expert, at least that is what his profile said before he changed it. I did a lot of research before I replaced the tires on the Monty and settled on the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A's. For the price I think they are right at the top of the list with a few others.

We need to replace our 3400RL tires. I had a right front blow out on the way home yesterday and the day before noticed that the left rear had a "chunk" out of it on the edge of the tread. I called my tire guy and he recommended Towmaster. I did some research and found all positive comments.
Does anyone have any experience with Towmaster?
Thanks
