reese pro series hitch issue

got back from perm stop over the summer and unhitched in front of the house. pulled the jaws release bar and no problem. went to close it and the right jaw only close. oh boy, got a problem. found the pivot pin that goes to the bottom of the left jaw had sheared off at the top and the pin fell down and went to the the top of the left jaw and was barely grabbing it.

almost a DISASTER for sure. i just got done towing 300 miles.

morale of the story check your hitch out on a regular basis. when did it happen, i don't know for sure but believe it was from the tow home or the hookup.

good thing is it got caught, and reese is sending me a new head for the hitch over night free of charge as a warranty item.

was thinking i was going to have problems getting to the Rocky mountain rally. hitch head will be here tomorrow.

thanks Reese

Wow! Glad you caught it like you did rather than the trailer coming loose.

Denis I also have a Reese with two jaws, mine is an R -20 so I just have to ask this question. What do you think could cause the bolt to shear off. I am glad you caught it as it would be a real issue for both the TV and fifth-wheel. So far I have been real happy with my hitch and I expect that to continue to be the case but I will surely be checking it out. Let us know what Reese has to say about this issue and it is great that they are taking care of the problem.

the only thing i can think of is i backed in to fast when hooking up but…………… i don't know. look down into your hitch from being right over top of it. mine has a bar under the jaws with a spring on it that comes down from top right to bottom left. the pin at the far left of this bar goes into a hole on the left jaw from underneath. that was the one that was sheared off. when i looked at it in the broke state, the bar was completely horizontal from right to left at the top of the hitch and the left pivot pin was grabbing the top of the left jaw by about 1/8 of an inch.. reese did not have much to say about it but told me "DO NOT USE IT". i am betting i did something stupid to cause the issue. you should be fine. just do your normal hitch inspections. for me it will be every time i hitch and unhitch now, not that i wasn't already looking. just going to climb up more often and check it from above.

receive the top end of the hitch and had a look at it. the top of that broken pivot pin is welded into the left jaw. that is what failed. guess i could hang on to the old one and have the kid reweld it for me as a spare.

I had noted after talking with several of the commercial 5th wheel haulers that they didn’t use Rees hitches.

Now I know why.
