Frame Rust

What can be done about the unsightly frame rust? Has anyone used any of the rust converter products? Or is plain old rustoleum the best bet?

Except for a few isolated spots which I lightly sand and spray with rustoleum, we also have never had an issue with rust.

Have not had a frame rust problem. But have used rustoleum on metal with only surface many times and it works well. If there is any scale it should be brushed well first.

Odd thing. When shopping for our Monte in 2007 there were two dealers with identical new 3075RL on their lots. But one had a frame almost completely covered in rust. The other had no visible frame rust. Both brand new. Both dealers in general DFW area. The rusty one caused me to be concerned about a rust issue on Montanas. But I bought the clean anyway. And 8 yrs later there is still only minimal surface rust.

Have had some rust issues particularly on the gas pipe running along the frame. I'll be putting rustoleum on it this winter, again. Our problem was caused by salt laden mud from the dirt roads near Yuma.

2 times a year I buy cheap armor all or other brands and spray the frame and axels down and get in to all the little areas that you cant reach then wipe down the frame and axels. it works real nice and in the end looks real good and it keeps the rust at bay. But this is really only good to keep the rust away if you do not have any or very little rust that you need to control from getting any worse.

Thanks for the responses. My frame had signs of rust when new. I am sure that the winter roads on the inaugural trip this February made it worse, as did the campground right across the road from the beach in Florida...
Looked at the Eastwood stuff and that was a direction I was thinking. Clean, convert and paint. I will give that a go and hopefully that will be a permanent fix.

Try OSPHO on surface rust. You can get it at Ace Hardware for about $15 a qt.
Follow instructions on container. Works great.

I just dealt with this issue myself. I used a soft sanding block on the frame and gas line that runs along the street side frame rail, wiped everything down really well then painted with satin rustolium. The frame looks great and was an inexpensive solution. I did wait till a day with no wind so I didn't have to deal with a bunch of overspray from drifting paint. Tim

You can wire brush the loose rust and flakes, spray one of those rust stop products that convert rust to whatever, then respray black. It will keep that rust from returning
