Driving to the CO Rally
Comments from the locals please.
I have driven CO 34 From Estes Park to Grand Lake with out the trailer and know is has a 12000 plus elevation and some good switch backs for the Montana. I plan on going that what when I leave the rally heading to SD.
I may come in from the south depending on schedule. I plan on coming in CO 40 from Empire to Grand Lake.
Are these the two roads every one else would use. It looks like the main and only way?
Safe travel all.

not sure exactly where you are coming from but I would go to Dillon (I70) and north on 9 then 40 from Kremmling to Granby then to Grand Lake. Avoids Berthod pass and it is a beautiful drive. Trailridge isn't even an option for us. 125 North from Granby is the way we go north to avoid Trailridge Have never pulled on any of these but have done it with car many times.

I agree with 70 to 9 to 40. Leaving for SD, I would follow 40 to 14 down to Fort Collins. At Fort Collins, pick up I25. Much better roads with a fifth wheel. If you want an additional treat, stop in Steamboat Springs.

We will take Berthoud Pass, which is Hwy 40.

We also would take Berthoud Pass, exit 232 off I70 if you are coming from Denver. The pass is mostly 3 lanes now, with uphill passing lanes. It is very comfortable towing on the pass, as long as you are OK with winding roads. The roomy switchbacks and pull-offs for downhill travel make it much easier traveling than several years ago. I use my E-brake for more easier travel. If coming from the west on I 70, then Rte. 9N is probably your best option. That route will alleviate the Eisenhower Tunnel and Berthoud Pass. This route also has no major hills.
As far as going to South Dakota, we prefer going 34 South to Granby, North on Rte. 40 to CO-125 N to WY-230 E. That takes you up to Laramie and you can then plan your route to South Dakota. The roads are narrow, but usually very empty & beautiful scenery. There is even a free public hot springs in Saratoga, WY, a must for us as we pass through.
