Towing a 3931FB

Hello all. The wife and I love the 3931fb and plan to purchase one in the fall (after prices drop). We're interested in knowing what options are necessary for the truck to pull this size model. What I want to know is the options necessary, i.e. tires, shocks, oversized radiator, rear axle ratio, extra fuel tank in the bed, sliding hitch, etc.

We're looking at either a Dodge 3500 or Ford F350 w/ diesel. So I'm not trying to start a debate on which truck. Rather what options are needed to pull this particular model.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Welcome to the forum. We have been on the road for 8 months with a 40' unit pulling it with a 2017 f350 DRW lariat fully loaded and are more than happy with it , it also came with an off road package which I am sure makes a difference, ford accessory 27k hitch included.

Been pulling for years with stock ford diesels. Only add-on to our current dually is a set of airbags.

Not getting into brand wars its what ever brand and its best with a one ton diesel long box and DRW makes it even better. get the integrated brake control option and i opted for the steel rims with black side walls so you can rotate any tire to any axle.

Since you brought up fuel capacity Ford in their CCLB trucks come with a 48G fuel tank.
Look at the tech on Fords You may like the tech better. I would also go dually. Towed ours with a 3/4, 1T SRW and a 1T DRW Dually was the only one not over weight. Ours started out with pin weight of 2560.

I don't know about Ford but Ram 3500 drw would be most likely ready just as you bought it for towing. The cooling system would be ready to go and you would most likely have an 373 gears which is very adequate. Be sure to get the 5th wheel prep which is an option and most likely already on the truck. The crew cab long bed has an 34 gal. fuel tank which i feel is inadequate if you are traveling long distances. I would suggest adding an aux. fuel tank in the 60 gal. range to the bed as this will keep you out of the truck-stops and be able to take advantage of the cheaper fuel you can find after parking the rv in the evening. This is one option that will pay for itself . Also you may want the factory air-bag option or have an independent install for you as to keep your rig running level. I have the Hensley TS-3 airbag hitch but there are many to choose from and most people have there favorite for what ever reason. If you go the long-bed you don't need the slider. The big 3 all have very adequate trucks for towing any of the Montana's. Safe Travels.

Any 1 tone truck is set up for towing. Makes no difference in which manufacturer you go with. I wouldn't add a aux fuel tank what a pain to install. I have a 26 gallon tank and that is just fine. One needs to stretch ones legs every few hours. I get 11.5 while towing which = 5 hours of driving. Adding more weight to the truck hurts fuel millage every day. Do you tow with your truck all the time or do you drive it around sightseeing? I use mine as a all around truck I don't just tow with it. I have taken 2 trips across the USA from coast to coast and I find fuel not a problem.

do however recommend air bags because they work with the shocks and cushion the ride. I would also recommend the onboard compressor because you never know if you have to air up in the rain. Also dragging out a compressor every time will be a pain. Been there done that. You will need a DRW to tow that big of a trailer even thought the 3/4 ton has the same motor and transmission.

You need nothing extra for any of these trucks. I would get the biggest fuel tank I could and get the one with the seats you like the best. I would recommend you go drive all three 3 then choose the one that fits your needs the best. They are all fine trucks. You will never know which is the best for you until you compare all of them. Good luck.

We have had a Dodge Mega Cab for 8 years of full timing and since it's a short bed use a Pullrite hitch. Was fine just from the factory and haven't felt the need for a larger fuel tank ever. We did add air bags, but it wasn't much different with them.

A 1 ton of any make will work, get the 5th wheel prep package, makes life much easier in the long run. For that unit, I would recommend a DRW just for the pin weight alone. At #2530 dry (per site), it may be over with a SRW. I have a '16 3500 CC DRW with the OEM Puck system hauling the 3700LK and I couldn't imaging hauling that with a SRW. We looked at all makes and models, but I decided to stick with the Chevy.

As a hitch, I have the #20k B&W. I have a long bed so no need for a slider.

If you decide on a RAM... get the Aisin tranny.

The Aisin in the Ram truck is a must have. They offer 2 transmissions the Aisin is by far the better transmission.

I bought this model late fall last year 2108 model. I pull it with Ford F350 Diesel dual rear wheel and hardly feel it back there after the initial tug pulling off from a stop. It is a very heavy RV and it does pull down on the truck body when I hook up.

Tow Vehicle

Agree with all above except extra fuel capacity. We run a short bed 350 and have added 90 gal additional fuel, it makes all the difference in finding the best price to RON refuel.

I too pull this unit with a 2008 F350 dually. Love the RV, but not happy with the a/c. In the shop now. The truck will drop in the back, but pulls beautifully.
