weight and axles

I put our truck and Montana on the scales in 2009 after we bought it but never really sat down and thought about it. It weighed 21700 CGVW, not a problem, but the other day I drove onto a closed scale in Oregon, truck with both axles on the scale was 10150, Montana with both axles on the scale 12400. This all sounds fine, except it has 6000 pound rated axles, so it looks like we are 200 pounds over on each one, we were not that loaded. I am not concerned about a failure, but really wonder why it didn't come with 7000 pound ones, I hate to think what a fully loaded one weighs.

I agree with you. However, I have had my 3075 all over the lower 48 on all kinds of roads along the way, and not had axle failure... yet.
It gets more complicated though. The brakes on the tow vehicle take more of the load because the 6000 pound axles have brakes sized for them too.
Tires have failed too... Marathons.
Keystone uses the 6000 pound axles because they cost less. Pure and simple.
MHO of course.

Dont forget to put the PIN weight into the equation.

X2, you have a fair amount of pin weight in there also.

DonD,

I found out the same thing with my 3670RL Montana. That is why (with 6000# AlKo axles) i just replaced my brake assemblies with #7000 Dexter brakes. They are interchangeable (info from Keystone and AlKo) with larger magnets and a better shoe composition. My buddy and I did it in about 4 hours...but that also included re-wiring my axles. Something to consider!

The way I read his post, he weighed the truck hooked to the RV with both axles on the scale...that would include PW. Then pulled the RV up so that both of it's axles were on the scale...still hooked to the truck.

When you weighed everything was the trailer hitched to the truck the whole time? Or did you unhitch with the weight of the pin on the landing legs and only the axles were on the scale? If so, then you are right, with only the trailer axles on the scale, weighing 12,400 is overweight by 400 lbs.

I highly recommend that each side or better yet, each individual wheel also be weighed to check which wheel(s) is/are overweight and by how much. I have done this for my rig and found they all ranged in weight carried but were all in compliance by several hundred pounds, some more than others.

Regarding the pin weight, I weighed the truck and it was 10150 including the pin weight, I then weighed the 5th wheel all 4 Montana tires on the scale, no pin weight was weighed, it was 12400 pounds on the trailer tires. I don't think anything will fail, the tires were junk 12 months after the rig was new, it now has BFG Com Truck tires, the brakes are new, and the stopping is fine with the exhaust brake in the Dodge, my Beef is they cut a corner that should not have been cut
