Sofa Bed Removal

Would like to hear from '06 3400 owners that have removed the sofa bed and put in something else. My main question is: Will the bed fit out the door? OR, Do I need to take the bed apart? OR, (heaven help me) take out the rear window to get it out? If the latter is the case, I think I may see a chainsaw in my future.

We want to put a Lazy Boy wall hugger love seat to match our wall hugger reclner.

Any advice would be helpful!!!!!!

Thanks Phil

I would think that it should fit through the door without a lot of difficulty. I don’t think I’ve seen this addressed but aren’t the doors on the Montana’s all the same size? We were able to fit a full size queen hide-a-bed inside ours (with the help of the clerks at the furniture store.) In some cases it may not be easy but if you’re watching someone else moving it becomes a lot easier!

It will come out the door. I have read post in the pass where others have done what you want to do. The back of the sofa will slide off making it easy to do.

Phil; there is no doubt that you will be able to remove that sofa bed it's just a matter of how difficult the job might be in dealing with the weight, restricted space and of course those unstable entrance stairs. From my experience there is only one way to make this easier and that is to lighten the load. As Dennis said #1 take the back off. Further to that I would #2 open the bed and remove the mattress and #3 detach the mechanism from the bed and remove it separately by lifting the sofa bed frame off the frame leaving that heavier piece to remove at the end. The mechanism is only held in there by at the most 3 screws and two bolts on each side. When you have the unit open with the mattress removed you will see just how easy this is. It's only time consuming to dismantle and reassemble the bed when out but it sure does save anyone from a strained back and damaging the bed, doorway and rig while struggling with the weight of the complete bed!!!

Phil, to remove the back, lift the fabric,it's velcroed, there are clips on each arm to release and remove back. I want to do the same thing with a love seat recliner. Let us know how it works.

Don't listen to the Harbor Duck!

Get a matching tent. It can be your "dog house!"

Back comes off.

Ours went out no problem on both our 2003 3295RK and our 2007 3400RL. The 2003 was a jacknife bed, the 2007 was a sofabed. Not the airbed but the standard sofabed. We put in a home style sofabed. It came in just fine. We had this same sofabed in both the 2003 and this 2007.

We hope to hit the road next fall with a new Zero Clearance Lazy Boy Love seat, so we will be disposing of the couch. I will either try to work it out without dinging up all the wood work or take the sawsall to it. Speaking of "lazy Boys" Wayne, I will be needing a seagoing Bellhop next fall, interested?...

Phil if it is the air bed sofa it comes apart very easily and makes removeing it much easier. I have removed mine both ways and the only way is to take it apart. Turn it upside down after removing the drawer and there are 4 bolts to take out and then it comes apart and can be removed by one person.

Does anyone know offhand what the air mattress sofa weighs? We have a 2010 Montana and are looking at ditching it for something different in the future. Just curious . . .

We have considered removing the OEM couch/bed and recliners. We would like to get furniture that might be lighter and should be better ergonomically that does not have to be moved to retract the slides. Please keep us posted on how this works out for you.

The Sofa and recliners that came with my rig as getting a bit beaten up and I want to replace them. Does any one know where I can pick up furniture that is decent, but mostly able to fit in the rig when closing the slides.

AJH, there is an RV furniture manufacturer near the Montana Factory in Indiana. I've never been there but maybe someone else has visited it and can jump in here with some information on it. It'd be perfect if you were going to the Fall rally and could check it out. We are actually looking for the "guts" to our sofabed. Might have to haul it out of the RV and get a couple of nice recliners instead, but really like the couch with the fold-out bed for visitors.

Since first posting in this topic, we sold the sofa/bed that came with our Montana. In its place is a twin bed set which we use as a daybed arrangement. It's great for lounging on with a book or (like right now) with my laptop. If needed, it serves as extra sleeping space. Lightened our weight by quite a bit and really like the change.
