Vaseline and rubber
I would be cautious about using vaseline , or any other petroleum jelly products on rubber seals. There is some disagreement, but most of the stuff I've read states that vaseline causes rubber to swell. Some o rings are synthetic and the vaseline will not bother them, but it is hard to determine the oring material unless you buy them new. Silicone grease is considered to be ok.

Grab a tube of "Dow 33" from a paintball shop for any of your o-ring lube. Its a silicone base lube and recomened for all the high end paintball markers.

I just had the gasket/seal replaced on my thetford toilet and the directions told us to use vasoline on the gasket/seal. I do not know if the gasket/seal is synthetic or not.

If the seal you replaced was the ball gasket, the folks at Thetford told be to use silicon based grease...which we did????

In the old days you had to use vasoline because there really wasn't an alternative. Now days there are lots of other choices.

That appears to be the issue...different products react differently to pretro based products...I think???

We've used vasoline for years to lubricate plumbing fixtures/valves/faucets, etc. No problems. You've got to figure that we use vasoline for "body" parts, and the doc even said for dry sinuses to put a little in your nose. That said, if it was going to deteriorate rubber seals/gaskets, why the heck would the doc tell you to "stick it up your nose".....???
Been using it (used to anyway) for babies diaper rash, too.
And, notice that while it says "petroleum jelly" the active ingredient is "petrolatum" not petroleum.

An interesting followup to the petroleum jelly, or vaseline.
From Wikipedia.......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_jelly
I especially like the part where Porsche recommends it for certain uses on their cars!
