That "new trailer smell"

For those who recently purchased a new Montana, how long did it take for the "new trailer smell" to dissipate?

We are primarily looking at buying used, but must also consider new. My wife is allergic to the formaldehyde which makes her eyes and nasal passages burn.

Thanks!

I have never noticed that in any Montana. Ours is 2010 and still smells good but not offensive like formaldehyde. Being a part time rv sales person , I am in alot of new coaches , all brands, and not so many have that anymore. When I do notice it is when they have been closed up in very hot weather. Larry

Interesting. There is definitely something "offensive to the senses" in new RV's.

However, when we went to the Houston RV show a few weeks ago, many didn't smell at all. We wondered if it was from being opened up and ventilated for weeks.

The newer units, unlike days of old, do not have the old formaldehyde smell. Materials used and all the regulations concerning gassing of those materials have made it a non issue. Even the carpet dye gassing is not like walking into a carpet store. I don't think you will find it objectionable.

Got our new 2011 Big Sky last April, did not notice any smell and my wife would have said something right away.

Lots of changes occurred in the last few years that places strict limits on what can be allowed to vent into the atmosphere. We got new carpet in our house and it didn't even have an odor. I use wood stain and the old volitale compounds by law had to be taken out. House paints the same. I guess they are trying to protect the ozone layer.

We have never noticed any negative odors, despite what we have read. Our Montanas have always smelled "nice and new"

Bought ours new last summer and haven't noticed a thing. It was the previous years model, but only sat closed up on the dealers lot before we bought it. We did notice it with our previous TT so I think it just wasn't there with the Monty.

Thank you for all of the replies. the 2012 345LBQ we toured last week definitely had an odor, as did the Cougar and several Fuzions we toured.

I would like to think manufacturers have improved their materials. What I read was that the regulations for reducing formaldehyde go into effect next year.

Like the others, just picked up our 2012 3750FL on February 14th, no odor whatsoever.

We had it when ours was new. We had to leave a window open in the bedroom so we could sleep. The odor lasted about 2 weeks.

I know the smell your talking about. I have a nose like a beagle. We just got ours back from all the warranty work, and I have been opening all the windows and vents everyday to help air it out. It takes a while but if you can open it up often it helps. Today was really windy and I had the wind blowing through it all day. I think this one the smell is stronger that our first Montana

Philhyde,
The smell of the first one we had (a 2002) model wreaked of the formaldehyde smell. It took us a good 6 months before the smell got weak enough for us stay in it. And even then it took about a year before it was truly liveable.

Our new 2012 has little to no out gas smells. There is just a hint of something but even it is not too strong. Absolutely nothing like our old rig. They really have done a fantastic job of taking out the offending gases. At least that has been our experience. Dennis and Mary Kay

Never noticed any chemical smell in our Montana, but the previous unit we had (TT) was like those described by others who indicated a need to "air out" the unit prior to use.

We bought our new Montana in December and stayed in it for four days. No problem with any smell. I also burnt a scented candle that might have helped.
