The Price of Owning an RV

Well, our registration was due for its first yearly renewal and my husband paid a visit to the Tag Office yesterday. They told him the Ad Valorium tax (also perversely known as the Birthday Tax) on the Monty alone would be just over $1,000. My dear husband called me at work from the Tag Office.

Our truck still sits in the driveway, unable to start (husband has been working through the weekend on critical projects at work and can't get to it) so the Monty sits in the driveway as well.

Husband questions spending so much on this RV when it "just sits there." I told him to tell the Tag Office they calculated the tax wrong. They were calculating the Ad Valorium on the purchase price, but the Monty is no longer new, and therefore lost a lot of its value. The tax went down to $620, which he paid.

Hopefully this will inspire him to fix the truck this weekend! Our first trip out of the year is only a month away.

Ouch! No wonder folks end up registering their RVs in different states. I never knew what Georgia charged for those plates. My 2008 3400RL was $50.00 a year in Illinois and the new Montana is the same. Of course the state of Illinois is beyond broke so that may soon change.

We're not all that far from TN. Maybe we should buy a place there and register the Monty there. Although I'm wondering about FL. If we had a residence there, we could get a resident's discount on Disney and I think there's no state income tax?

Oh well, retirement is only 8 years away!

Our problem isn't the Monty although the tag folks think it's very nice, our problem is our truck and the new car. Those are the reason the bank is going to open an office in the court house to process home equity loans for your tags.

Birthday Tax??? Geez its rediculous what they name taxes these days. In Maryland we have a rain tax. They tax you on how much rain there is per year and add the rain tax to your realesate tax. But our RV tags are about $200 every few years.

yeah in WA state about 10 years ago same thing about 1000 bucks for tabs then they repealed the tab tax rip off now about 100 bucks Don't know about GA but what we did before was just get 3 day trip permits for 20 bucks and park our rig at our vacation spot for a few weeks and get another one when we left and that is how we got around that deal

Don't come to Maine. When we bought our 2011 Big Sky it was $2400.00, they go by sticker price, not what you paid for it.

Goes down a few hundred each year for 5 years. This will be our 4th year and it will be somewhere between $900.00 - $1000.00.......

Our 3100rl was $410 for permanent tags. We make up for it with our other property and income taxes. They government gets your money one way or another.

Ouch, some of these prices! Here in Manitoba ours is insured and plated for less than $600. annually and it's provincial government insurance with a monopoly. Guess we have no room to complain after all.

My SOB has been in Mexico for several years, i still have to pay $300+ /year for it in CA. No Non-op plates for trailers. Don't remember what the Monty costs, will remember in a couple months.

Texas, makes no $cents.....

Montie by GVWR $125.
'12 Ram by GVWR $56 + $11.50 county fee
'11 CRV same as truck
'11 single axle 2900lb GVWR utility trailer same as truck

Still reasonable since no state income tax. However if you own a house in Texas, get ready, the property tax will make up for the low tag prices. But, they do have homestead laws which help.

Jim

Don't remember what we paid for our 05 Monty tags, but it was once and they are permanent as long as you own it. Same for trailers, motorcycles, atv's etc.

In Massachusetts, the Montana is $50 a year. The truck, which needs to be registered commercially because it's over 10k GVW, is $240. So I guess I shouldn't complain too much. These charges don't include insurance or excise taxes. RAIN tax???

From memory in Tennessee the yearly Montana tag is $14. Truck yearly (joint farm and consumer use) tag @ 26K GCVW (wt of truck and trailer) is $148. We have a sales tax of 7% on registered autos and travel trailers etc. Plus, some Tennessee counties also have a wheel tax of various amounts (example: Warren County I think is $50 yearly) for each tagged auto/rv.

Think in NY it is about $180 so I wait until we start out then renew so it is pro rated.
