Weak Valve Stem = Flat Tire
I had new tires put on MONTY yesterday. SLOAT TIRE SHOP in Batavia, NY did it. While I was there four 18-wheeler tractors come in for service. This is a big truck tire shop. I told them about my flat, cause by a leaking valve stem, and they showed me what happened. The old valve stem top separated where it was inserted into the rim. The copper insert stops at the rim’s edge. They replaced them with newer high pressure valve stems which have a copper insert that goes the full length of the valve stem instead of just to the rim’s edge.
The service man said these new valve stems came out after Ford had all their tire problems. These new valve stems was one of the recall fixes. Any way if you have a problem with flats from bad valve stems this may help.
By the way the Good Year store that fixed my flat (bad valve stem) did not have these high pressure valve stems so you may have to find someone who handles high-pressure tires.

When the time comes to replace the tires on the Apartment, I am going to replace the stems with the solid stems that are used a lot on chrome dresser wheels or aluminum wheels. These stems have a rubber seal on the base, a solid metal stem, no rubber and a locknut on the outside. I have never had one leak and have put them on all my cars and motorcycles that I built over the years.

I replaced all the valve stems on the Monty and the TV with the steel valve stems when they were both new.
I had two flats with the high pressure rubber stems in the first six months on the Ford truck. That was in 2001 and no problems since.
You can purchase them in a 4 pack at auto stores, like Auto Zone etc.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

We put the steel stems on when we got our new rims.
Steve: Looked at you map. You should go back to your birth state. We pass through Batavia when we head south or over to Indiana on Rt.5, if I remember correctly.

LOL, Bill. You're right about that. We've been there several times, just not since we started fulltiming. We had that planned for this Fall but family commitments (new granddaughter) changed our plans! But we WILL get there eventually.
