Ford 5th wheel prep pkg

I am in the process of ordering a 2012 F350, SRW, 4x4 Short bed crew cab. Ford offers a 5th wheel prep package that works with Resse hitches. The package includes 5 bed attachment points with plugs, one frame cross member and 7 pin trailer connector. According to the Ford documentation the package is compatible with certain Reese hitch kits which makes me assume that there is no point in ordering this option.

Has anyone used this package with a Pullrite Superglide 18k hitch? The superglide arms are adjustable side to side.

Thanks,

Ken

Ken,
You have me confused (which is easy now-a-days) but are you saying you don't need the 5th wheel prep package because you use a hitch other than a Reese? If so you may want to see if the package would help with your Pullrite Superglide. I don't know much the package costs but I'd tend to opt for the package. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing. Happy Trails, Dennis.

Dennis,
They charge $370 for the package. My question is this, if the holes don't line up with the Pullrite hitch, I have to drill 4 more in the bed. If so, I have paid for 5 unnecessary holes (the 5h hole is for a gooseneck application). The only benefit would be the cross member and an extra trailer light plug. The Ford spec sheet is specific for Resse and their hitch kits only and doesn't mention any other applications. Ford also sells the Reese hitch along with the kit for another $1695-long bed only.
Hope this clarifies my question.
Thanks,
Ken

PS I like the updated photo now with the 3 pooches!!

When I ordered our 2011 F350 DRW we found that the 5th-wheel prep only worked with the Ford Reese hitch made for Ford. We had a different brand hitch and wanted to keep it so we didn’t order the Ford prep or their hitch. If you want to use a different hitch then don’t order the prep kit. If you want to use the Ford Reese hitch then order the prep kit and the hitch from Ford. If you have a Reese signature series hitch I believe that it will work with the Ford 5th-wheel prep kit…but check to make sure. As you know we don’t need any more hole drilled in our new $60K truck then necessary.

Karl,
Thanks for the additional information. Makes sense.

Ken,
Thanks for the $$ figures. Not too bad but if it works only with the Reese and you're using something else then it only makes sense to NOT get it. As Karl said we certainly don't need any additional holes in a new truck!

It is so hard to get all three of the puppies in one place at the same time it has taken me awhile to finally get the picture. Jack Craig (jjackflash) is the one who actually took the picture.

Good luck with your new truck. You will love it. Happy Trails, Dennis.

It is designed for Reese's Elite Series hitches which don't use rails, but they have adapter kits for other hitches. I really like the clean installation and no rails in the bed sticking up. I am ordering a new F350 with the prep and the hitch because it's a lot cheaper than ordering the kit and having it installed. Comes with the 25k hitch from Ford not the 18k.

I had this option in my 2011 F350 and also ordered the Reese Elite 5th wheel hitch that goes with it. It does leave the bed nice and clear when removed. The 5th wheel prep package also includes the electrical plug in the bed for your 5er. Overall I love it. My only feedback to Ford would be to have had another camera on the rear of the cab looking down at the hitch. Would have cost very little to include this and would make hitching an absolute breeze. The camera in the tailgate (clearly useful for towing other things (non-5th wheel), but is useful until I drop the gate and then it shows me a lovely view of the floor.

If the hitch you want to use is not the right hitch for the Ford Super Duty hitch prep package and there is no adapater kit for your hitch to match it up to the Ford prep package holes I would not order it.

Also - this may have changed - but when I ordered mine, the 5th wheel prep package was only available with the long bed.
Happy travels.

Thanks for the feedback,
Ordered truck without package. BTW, ExPatNW, you can order pkg with short bed. They will not order the hitch unless you have the long bed.

I believe Pullrite make a universal rail set that fits other brands, give the Pullrite factory a call, they have been very helpful when I have called regarding mounting questions for 2 previous vehicles.

I have a 2011 short bed with pullrite hitch. The frames is drilled for the hitch but not the floor of the bed. minoe problem , also let some installer mount your plug inside the bed of the truck. You have to order from pullrite the frame brackets but then my old hitch fit on those perfect. I have a F250 with air bags as the only dif between a F250 and a F350 is 1 leaf in the spring which is why I put on air bags . Your Ins will be higher on a F350 as its considered a const truck.

Northforker,
Yes, I called Pullrite, they have kits for the F350 & they were very helpful

Sailer,
Not sure about your states insurance but the pickups regardless of size go on a personal policy in my state if they are personal use pickups. We must insure a contractor using a pickup on a commercial auto policy due to its use, not its size. (I've been an insurance agent for more years than I care to count!). As far as premium, the difference between a similar equipped F250 & 350 was less than $10 per year.

I am in the same situation except my truck already has the factory prep. Now I am trying to figure out how the PullRite SuperGlide will mount. Dealer is saying an extra $500 for an adapter kit. At roughly $1700 for the hitch and another 500 for adapter rails i am seriously considering droppong back to a Reese hitch. Advice?

I would shop around for better pricing on the Pullrite. Have never owned one, but have owned a Reece. Would go with the Pullrite!

B&W makes an OEM for the Ford prep. ~$900 and has 20k rating.

Look on the internet at Reese they have an adapter kit for a bit above $300.00 that will match up to most any hitch. That is what I am going to do when my 2015 F350 arrives.

I ended up ordering the Reese adapter frame to fit the Ford factory prep package. Then I mounted a 20k Reese square tube slider. My wife and I had installed in a couple of hours. eTrailer dot com gets majorvkudosmgor price AND delivery time. CW on Wednesday could not get me a hitch to fit the Fird package by the Saturday delivery date. I called eTrailer on Wednesday evening and had four packages on my porch Thursday afternoon.

First pull was scary as I did not trust my work. We got home safe and sound, only a couple minor adjustments needed. While is still covet a PullRite this Reese unit is working pretty good.

I bought a like new Pullrite slider last fall off of Craig's list. I wanted to replace the Reese slider I had.. I paid $650 for it and it had been used 1 time.. That was a great find and have been a happy camper ever since... It came with the adapter kit for a newer Chevy also.. Everything looked new and sold that adapter kit with my old reese for $450 so it cost me $200 to change hitches.. So I would get the pullrite if you can...

I just order the B&W Companion RVK3300 model that fits the Ford system (http://www.turnoverball.com/products...rd-puck-system).

It has gotten excellent reviews everywhere I have searched. It's much more affordable than the Ford/Reese model.
