We have wanted to put filters under our stairs but I wasn't sure how to do it. Thanks for the info. I have already put filters in my floor registers, which filter air coming out but not going into the furnace.

Filtering the air is good. The only thing I would caution is keep them clean. Poor air floor causes the heat exchanger to over heat and cause premature failure. Burning out a heat exchanger then allows the exhaust flue air to enter the room air side. Keeping the filter clean and good air flow is nessary.
