Rain Storm & Leak

We had a horrific rain storm last night. The vent in the kitchen over the sink island developed a leak along one edge. Never had a leak prior. Do I need to reseal the vent? If so what do you recommend I use. Why did it start leaking now - wear? We are leaving Florida on Saturday this week and I want to repair it before we head out.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I would get a ladder and check it. Wind can open the vent and allow rain in when the conditions are right.

We just had the happen while visiting our son in Oregon. I found about a six inch crack in the sealant that went around the outside of the vent that I had to reseal. Depending what you find you can usually clean the old sealant and put new Dicor on top of the old. There are lots of videos on youtube that shows you how. My own was bad enough I chose to remove some of the sealant and sealed it up with Eternabond tape.

Okay, went up on the roof and inspected everything that looked like it could allow rain/water in. No cracks, holes, nothing. So, I am going to guess that the leak came from rain blown in up under the cover and vent lid. Regardless, I am going to caulk around everything just to make sure. I don't want to be going down the road in a rain storm and end up with a flood in the kitchen.

Thanks

Don-- While up on the roof and checking the vent cover and the vent itself, you might want to remove the cover and have Ann open the power vent some. You might have a gasket that is letting the rain in that way under the vent door or cover. I have seen where the units will not close completely also. Have Ann run the power vent up and down a few times and make sure the vent cover closes completely. Aside from that, and you say you don't have any cracks up there around the vent, it had to be the wind driving the water under the power cover and into the vent itself or around it.
Let us know what you find!

Never trusting the rig to bare vents, I put max aire covers on both vents and don't have to worry.

We have the Max Aire covers on all vents! That was my point.

I had a similar problem about two weeks ago after a week of solid rain. Discovered the leak when we open the oven door and water poured out. Rain was coming in behind the stove vent, running down behind the back splash - into the oven - pooling in the drawer below. Two of the screws that secured the vent cover and not been put into the wood, allowing the rain to enter. Resealed everthing and problem corrected.

We have a brand new 2018 3121RL and I had to reseal the entire Kitchen slide and the vent, when it poured the rain ran down the slide into the stove vent outside and we found water on the counter by the stove, not much but once I resealed the entire slide and outside vent cover we have no more issues.

I went around the entire rig and found areas where the factory did a poor job sealing so I resealed the entire unit
