Rim Size
I have a 2010 3455SA with Marathon tires. I plan to replace them with something better in the spring. I've been looking at GY 614 tires, but the website says they require 6.5" tires. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the rims on my trailer are 6". If so, can I do the 614's with these rims or do I need to upgrade? Options-wise, if I go to a LT tire, I'll need something capable of handling a 7k axle. I don't have to do anything 'til spring, and intend to research this, but does anyone have anything to offer as far as suggestions to get me started? I'm really not interested in replacing the rims just so I can go and spend $300+ per tire on GY614's. Appreciate any advice.

As long as those rims are rated 110 psi, they are fine. My 3402RL came with Marathons, but the G614's were an option using the same wheels. When I upgrade to either G614's or the Sailun's, I will be using the same wheels I have. I have read that 1/2" is not a problem.

That's good news for me. Thank you. I really would prefer to buy the G614's but not if I had to replace the rims also. I know these rims are rated for 110 psi, as I checked them earlier this summer.

As proof to your statement, the tires that GM put on my truck were rated by the manufacturer as requiring a 7" wheel, minimum. Yeah, GM used a 6.5". A narrow rim 'may' cause a tire to bow and wear the center faster than the rest of the tire, especially at maximum inflation, but I haven't seen any problems with the folks here who run the "G" size tires in that respect.

We have a 2010 and our wheels are rated 110#. We've had G614's for two years now with no problems what so ever.

Same here, we put G614s on the OEM Rims of our 2010 Montana without any problems.

If you want to be safe, get a statement from Goodyear saying they will honor any problems you have with using the 614 on a rim that is less width than what they specify. If you can, then you are covered. IF you can't, then I would walk away from that situation in my opinion. I value my rig and road safety, which is why I switched away from the marathons after slightly less than 1 year on my new 3800RE after I became aware of the Marathon issues. After 8000 miles of towing at 60mph on the marathons, I had two blowouts and damage to a shear spring on my last trip north...I waited too long. So I switched to med duty commercial truck tires on new rims. I went with 17.5 inch wheels with 17.5 inch Sumitomo tires that are rated for 4805 lbs at 125 psi(load range h). I could have also gotten Goodyear G114LHT, Michelin, or Cooper tires. Got them mounted, balanced, and shipped via fed-x (only $168 for shipping from ohio to maine in less than a week). These are available from Trailer Tires and Wheels in northern ohio (trailertiresandwheels.com) 419-272-2277 To give you an idea of the load ratings for the sumitomo tires, at 110psi they handle 4385 lbs, which is much higher than the G614 by Goodyear. At 95psi, they are still good for 4010 lbs. And needless to say they can run way faster than I would ever tow...no 75mph limit...although I still tow at 60mph and rarely at 65mph. John

Forgot to mention that all these tires that I mention in 17.5 inch size are all less in diameter than the Marathons (30.7"). Hope this helps in some way with your decisions. John
