rear axle on backwards

Just had the brakes checked, and found that the rear axle was on backwards. Of course the warenty time as passed. Any one else ever had this trouble.

Is the axle actually backwards, or are the brake assemblies just on the opposite ends? Of course, if they are opposite from where they should be, the brake adjusters will only work in reverse instead of while going forward like they are intended to be. Should be a fairly easy fix to just put the left and right assemblies in their proper places.

I doubt if there is a difference in front or back of axle, just brakes

The brakes will adjust in either direction, not just reverse. I'd also like to know what the difference is.

The wiring for the rear axle had the wires coming in from the back not from the front like the other axle was.

There is a Front and Back to the brakes, while they will work in reverse they will not give the full brakeing force as going forward. So if yours were mounted backwards, your front axle brakes have been doing a majority of the job.

This sounded so strange I figured this was another spammer that got into the forum. But then, Keystone has done so pretty lame things on the montana line. It would be nice to know what model and year this axle reversal happened to. John

Assuming you have 6000# axles ... If the brake assy is 023-466 on the street side and 023-467 on the curb side about all you have wrong is toe out instead of toe in. Another way to tell if the brake assy is on the right side is the actuator arm the magnet rides on should be forward ... larger brake shoe to the rear. Actually, I can't swear to the toe in or toe out in this guys case ... without an alignment check.

I'm willing to bet, this being a recent discovery, that his axles are in fact 7,000 lb axles. With the drums off, on the backing plate, there will be a small label that says, either 'RIGHT SIDE' or "LEFT SIDE'. And no, these assemblies will only self adjust in the forward direction when braking. The drum must be rotating forward to move the adjusting lever that causes the linkage to turn the adjuster.

Hi

I haven’t looked close at the self adjusting trailer brakes but knowing how self adjusters work on Cars and trucks. Cars and trucks will not adjust but in one direction and the reason for cars and trucks to adjust in reverse only is to prevent over adjustment because of “panic” breaking.

The self adjusting drum brakes on cars and trucks only adjust when brakes are applied while the vehicle is moving backwards.

However looking at an exploded view of the Dexter RH self adjuster break it will only adjust going forward.
