Bicycle Rack

What type of bicycle rack do you have. We are looking at one that mounts on the bumper....have seen the ones that mount on the ladder. Which do you prefer?

Ours is a Swagman 2 bike carrier that mounts in the 2 inch receiver that I had welded on by MorRyde in Elkhart, IN. We did not want to put the added stress on the ladder, many do and get away with it but we did not want to do that.

I tried lots of bike racks. The hitch that comes with the Montana is worst than useless. It is dangerous. It allows for too much bounce. Tears things apart.

exav8tr put his own on and that sounds like it would work fine. It is much more rugged than the stock 1 1/4" tubing hitch.

The ladder will not withstand many trips with bikes mounted on it. Ladders are not attached to much. The vibration and bouncing from the bikes will cause problems.

I have switched to a front mount hitch on my truck and a Yakima stick up rack.

Good luck with your decision!

There will be a recurring theme - receiver hitch. There are lots of good ones starting at $100 up. The expensive part might be adding the receiver to your Mountaineer. It is the way to go. Less damage to bicycles and safer. Good luck with that new Mountaineer. Enjoy.

exav8tr I am thinking of doing the same to my Monty just not sure if I need more then one point on each frame rail. I was thinking of welding plates to each rail dropping them so I cam weld or bolt a cross beam with the reciever on it. Soes that sound about what yours is like?

We used a ladder rack for a couple of years. If you attache the rack firmly to the ladder and the bikes firmly to the rack you can get away with it. We did with no problems. However I was not happy with that arrangement and had the MOr Ryde build me a bike rack, same rack that Phil had installed.

Tfthorp.... That sound like what Mor Ryde did. They also extended the hitch out far enough so that the handlebars of the bike clear the rear of the camper.

Thanks........I will look into installing a receiver hitch. It would be my preferred method. No welding skills so I will check around.

We beefed up the existing hitch receiver by extending a piece of tubing forward, then spanning across between the frame beams. You can find our photos of this on a thread here from last summer. It works OK, but if I had to do it again, I would have increased the tubing to 2". We had a Yakima stick rack, but it was too long, too much swing and bounce. We have a Swagman rack, now. Lower and much better, but make sure that it's far enough away from the back to prevent the handlebars from touching the back window!

There are bike racks available that fasten to the square sewer bumper that I believe are on the Mountaineer- We have used a Swagman in that configuration on a previous SOB- It was very stable- Enjoy the search! Don
