Lower Storage Handles/Locks

Has anyone replaced the cheap locks (I have just broken another one) on the lower storage doors. I am considering this type of handle/lock (which appears to be on the new RV's). Is it difficult to replace if anyone has experience.

I replaced mine with similar locks that were keyed differently and so far no problems. If you go the way you're looking at please post pictures, it looks like a better way to go.

I took an easier route, but I would say it would be a fairly extensive undertaking. The slam locks (as shown) need a much larger opening to be installed (large and square instead of a small round one). There is also additional hardware (the latch catch) that needs to be installed onto the door frame. As a word of caution, the model you have shown states it is for a 1.5" or thicker door, I can assure you the Montana doors are not that thick. Oh, before I forget, the easier route I took was to simply buy the slam locks at a very exorbitant price. Fortunately they came equipped with a newer Montana wrapped around them.

Bingo I'm with you the only thing holding me back is "MONEY"LOL. They are to thick for our doors. The doors are App 5/8" thick. My locks would keep coming loose so this pass week I removed mine and cut a pc of 3/4"ID thin wall tubing 9/16" long and put it in from the back side till it was pressed against the outside fiberglass and reinstalled the nuts and now I can snug them up tight and the door won't crush. the inner panel is plastic with styrofoam in the center and would just cave in when you tryed to tighten them now they can be tightened good.

Our new rig has the new type locks and handles along with the gas struts. The front basement still is the old style. Haven't decided yet if I'll replace the front with the same type or not. I'm so lazy I'll probably just leave it as it is. Dennis

Whatever lock you use, a prybar will pop the door open. Keeps the honest thief out. Guess we are lucky, since 1971 with our first trailer, we have never had a problem at any campsite or storage lot re theft. And as most know, the older type storage locks, thru 2010 with the Montana use the universal 751 key, common with most trailers. I do like those new locks that came out with the 2011 Montanas.
