When I replace my anode, I poor in one cup of clorax. Then put in the new anode (I back the wheels up on a block so clorax does not spill out of tank) and turn on land water to fill tank. Open up hot faucets in kit and bath and let run until you no longer smell the clorax. This cleans out all your lines. Remember when filling hot water tankI leave overflow valve open to bleed off the air pocket. Once water is coming out of the over flow, you can close it

If we want to clean the lines, which is a bit off subject here, but, since has been addressed will give short version of our fix

add 1/2 cup of bleach to 60 gallons of fresh water (tank). Yep, that is all 1/2 cup bleach, and even that is pretty strong smelling to the Stevens' noses.

Run water thru ALL lines till you can smell it coming out, cold, shower, all faucets, etc.

Leave sit for a while if at all possible. Over night/12 hours is sufficient.

Run water out of tank, fill tank with clean water, run thru system, usually one more 60 gallon tank is sufficient. Run thru ALL faucets again, hot and cold. Hot makes it go thru the water heater.

Some people then follow up with vinegar and other stuff, lemon water, etc. We don't, as we don't mind the chlorine smell if it is not strong.
