Linda, I'm so sorry to hear of your accident but am thankful the injury you suffered wasn't more serious than it was. I think from now on I'll do both the sniff test, as Patodonn suggested, and also will stick the flame in the open area before I put my head down there to guide the flame to the pilot light. Thank you for the warning and I'm really glad to hear you are ok, although a bit singed.

As the others have stated before us, we also are sad hearing of your misfortune. We are thankful that nothing more serious happened to you. Material things can be replaced. We hope that you heal fast and any loses are replaced quick for you. Thanks so much for alerting all of us to this potential danger.

So glad the situation was not worse, it could have been. Sounds like the detector did not go off because the gas was not there until you turned the gas on.
