mirrors for towing
Hi we just joined this site and we owned a class C in the past and decided that fifth wheel is the way for us to go right now.
We just purchased a Montana 2955RL and we will be pulling it with a Chevy 2500 HD 8100 V8 allison transmission. Are the stock mirrors on this truck adequate for towing or will they have to be modified.
We are really eager to get our fifth wheel and get going.

Hi Nancy,
Welcome to the MOC! I think your question can't be answered too well with the info you've provided because Chevy has a number of different mirrors that have been used over the past several years. Mine (on an 04 Chevy 3500) are "camper" mirrors which extend several inches at the touch of a button - and are adequate for towing my 3400LR. My previous tow vehicle, used with a Cougar TT, was a Tahoe which didn't have those mirrors. I had to use some add-on mirrors made for that type vehicle which slipped over the existing mirrors. Have you picked the Monty up yet? How were the mirrors on the ride home?

Nancy and Brian,Sounds like you have the standard mirrors that do not extend which you are going to need.Their is a lot of after market repacement mirrors and clip on type.I ordered my GMC with the extended and broke one the replacement was $190.00 just to give you an idea on the OEM replacemrnt from GMC parts dept which I am sure would bolt on to your truck. These are manual but their are remote's in the after market.

My father-in-law has pulled for years with the standard mirrors and seems to like it just fine. I use the slide on extensions with mine and really like having the extra 4 inches on each side. I don't like towing without them. We bought ours on-line from Cabella's for less than we had found them anywhere. I did price the replacement mirrors with electronic controls and the dealer wanted over $3000.

From what I've been able to see from 15 years of watching folks try to back units into camper spaces, is that the mirrors really show their usefulness right then.. Short mirrors, you can probably get by with in most situations, but when you need to see to back up.. especially in a space that is tight... you will bless those outriggers. I've seen too many folks give up and find a pull through rather than back where they can't see.

Welcome,
I have the same trk. except I have the camper mirrors and they are worthe the money. RangerMelB is right, backing up and seeing behind you could cause a problem. Ask if you could try them out.
