Red face water pump running

the only time we've used our water pump is when we winterized and ran antifreeze through the lines. Last year I noticed that when I put the pump on and no faucets were turned on, the pump ran. Is that normal and maybe I didn't notice it before? I don't see any leaks anywhere.or could it be running because the water tank is empty?

There are several things that would cause the pump to run continuously but trying to run it when the tank is empty will do it for sure. The pump won't shut off until the system is pressurized so it just keeps trying to build up pressure.

we've never put water in our holding tank other than what came with the dealer..We "thought" we put some in on the way home from our seasonal this past year to help clean the tank..but I honestly don't think it was a whole lot. Now that it's home I'll try filling the tank again and see what happens. Thanks so much..

If no faucets were on the pump couldn't pick up any water even if the tank was full.

... but the pump wouldn't be primed, either. Also, when you, have water in the tank, your valve must be set to normal flow, rather than tank fill. That will cause the pump to run even with a full tank.

Scattershit and DQDick hit it on the head. The pump will run some to charge the lines but will then shut off if you have water in the holding tank. It will also run trying to charge the lines if there is no water in the tank. This can harm the pump if letting it run for any time. If the fill valve is open, as scattershot stated, it will run also trying to charge the lines.
