Diesel gas prices

I don't know what is going on here in our section of Oregon but last week our diesel prices started climbing from about $2.10 to now as high as $2.63. Regular gas is about $2.00. Any other section of the country experiencing the same problem? Other areas of Oregon do not have prices as high as ours. The gas companies give lots of reasons, none of which make a bit of sense since the next town north of us is as much as 30 cents a gallon cheaper for diesel.

Whoa, I hope we don't see this as a national happening. For the past couple months our diesel prices have been steady at 2.03 a gallon. Sure don't want to see them start to rise just as we are getting into the season.

Think that we must be blessed in this part of The Lone Star State for now...diesel mostly about $1.89/gal., but can be found in places for 6-10 cents cheaper, gasoline running about $1.69/gal. Our friends in Austin are considering raising fuel taxes and adjusting them according increases in the CPI.

I sure hope it doesn't happen everywhere. Here in Savannah, GA, gasoline is $1.829 and diesel is $1.979. As of yesterday anyhow. I'd still like to know why diesel is higher than gasoline and is staying that way.

Steve-
I think that the problem with the diesel price being higher than gasoline will continue to be that way. There are specs that the Feds require to the amount of sulphur that the oil companies are allowed to have in the products on the market. They demand the spec to be lower as each year passes. End result is the increased cost of producing the lower sulphur diesel requires more effort on the refiners part. Diesel is harder to cleanup than gasoline in that they have to run higher temps on the Hydrotreaters. Increased cost of Natural Gas is also figured into the equation and you and I pay for all this at the pump.

I should have added that we are on the I-5 corridor just north of the CA border and we are not in an isolated area. I have recently heard the state of Oregon is investigating the oil companies and the price structure in our state. We do not have self-serve gas and there has been a lot of pressure to change over to that, but we have never voted for it. That can't account for more that 1-2 cents a gallon anyway.

Toolmanroy,
Up here in Eastern Washington diesel is over $2.68 a gallon and seems to be climbing. I have been running over into Post Falls, ID. to get it from the Flying J where I was getting it around $2.15 or less. Just checked the web site and they are now at $ 2.39 a gallon, so not much saving anymore. If your interested check out www.flyingj.com they have all their fuel prices listed on that page across the nation. Pretty sad that some are as cheap as $1.78 and we are close to $3 a gallon. Hope something happens soon.

Not too sure what is going on with the diesel prices, but here in Ohio along I-75, it's around $2.09 a gallon. Very suprised the truckers haven't done something yet, the last time they protested and almost shut the industry down. The gas prices go up and down by as much as .30 a gallon on the weekend, but the diesel never goes down.

In addition to any "monkey business" the oil companies may be playing, diesel is the same basic oil stock that is used for home heating oil and jet fuel.

I understand that about the home heating fuel and jet fuel, but normally that only inflates the price at the BEGINNING of the heating season when they are stockpiling. What is their excuse now?

The truckers fuel surcharge came about years ago when the truckers threatened a slow down. The government allowed the truckers to tack on the surcharge and so now the consumer not only pays at the pump but for every product you purchase that has anything to do with the trucking industry. There are few products in today's world that do not rely on trucks. From the raw materials to the final delivery and most everything in between.

Before anyone thinks I'm knocking truckers, I am not. As I stated in a different thread I was once a trucker and a Teamster at that. It is the oil industry that has done more for the rising prices in most anything we buy today. In some way shape or form everything we buy relys on oil.

The answer for everyone might be in soy beans.

We are not too happy with our section of the country being singled out for the extremely high diesel prices. It is currently $2.71 and climbing daily. I note that some sections of Washington are the same.

I read yesterday on the "Turbo Diesel" website that the reason for the high diesel prices in the Pacific Northwest are due to a refinery in Canada being shut down for several weeks ??? Don't know if this is true or not.....

I would believe that if the prices were the same throughout the state. In Portland it is up to 40 cents cheaper per gallon and we are 250 miles south of there and even farther from Canada. Even California is cheaper.

On the west coast in Washington and up near the border to Canada the price ranges from 2.39 to 2.69. It is scary as we face retirement and fixed incomes. Some of our plans for travel have gone up in exhaust fumes....

Blame it on the oil companies, and blame it on the enviremental wacks.Remember back during the oil embargo the oil companies said they did not have refineing capacity, well thats the same song and dance they put out now. It is hard to believe that they could not build a refinery in over thirty years. We should be calling our goverment officals all day long and complain, give them no slack. Terry
