Nominal Tonnage on title???

Anybody know what that means? I was looking at the title for the shipping weight of my F250 (it's 6920) and noticed a "nominal tonnage" rating. In researching via google, about all I'm finding is reference to nominal ratings of 1 ton and of 3/4 ton, for determining vehicle registration fees. Anybody know what this term is all about?

On edit, I was not looking at the South Dakota title. I was looking at the original Certificate of Origin from Ford. I had made a photocopy before sending the original to SD.

Steve,

If like Nevada, it means how much you're towing (and thus tearing up the roads), and thus how much extra tax you have to pay.

Does it have to do with 3/4 ton or 1 ton or 1 1/2 ton?

Every vehicle has a nominal weight put on the manufacture certificate of origin when you purchase new. My dually was over the normal 3 ton license that I had on my previous 1 ton SRW, so they told me I had to pay a 5 ton fee of $105. I called them out and said it can't weigh that much more than my previous truck and after they checked I should have had to pay for at least a 4 ton license on the '04 F350.
