Montana Sky, you did even better than you thought. 510/21.4 is 23.84 mpg! Nice numbers!

Steve,
Sorry my fingers got ahead of my brain. Correction-I ran 510 miles on 24.1 giving me a 21.2mpg. There we go, that looks better. Either way I am still happy to be over 20mpg with the way diesel prices have leveled off.

One other serrvice item that is often neglected is the spin on trans filter. I change mine every other oil change. It's cheap insurance to take dirt out of the system and they are only about $7 from an Allisom trans shop.

I also added a secondary fuel filter after the factory one. It filters down to 10 microns compared to the factory 20 micron (I think).

Montana Sky, that's still real good numbers. Better than I get on my Ford, assuming we're including total driving from fillup to fillup. With 510 miles on the tank I imagine that's everything.

My truck is still pretty new to me with 6000 miles 1000 in-tow. Getting 14mpg in-tow and 16.5mpg down the road. The GMC and Ford were both a close call on which truck to buy. The Ford is less money liked there Tow Command and like the mirrors on the Ford better, but there transmission problems weighed heavy in my decisions. The 6980# GMC pulls my 2955RL with ease with its 2200# pin wt 10200# trailer Wt. My dealer helped me up grade tire but I stayed with stock size because of warranty worries. All in all great truck great trailer behind it!!!

Labarnas,
Congrats on the new truck and coach. I am sure you will be nothing but happy with the way the two work together. I am getting a pretty constant 14mpg towing the 3400RL and run 17-19 town and 20-22 highway. Pretty sure your GMC is going to only get better as you get some miles on it.

I guess I will put this question on the GMC and Chevrolet trucks to bed. Thanks for all of the information. It helped make our decision a lot easier. Good By ford and hello 2500HD GMC SLT Sierra Crew Cab diesel. Now what is the best hitch I should go out and get. This Sierra has the standard 6 ft bed. Our old 20K Reese is not a slider.

Reese Signature 18k slider with under the bed mount $989.00 no tax free/shipping. Great hitch locking jaw wraps the pin, 4 way movement, 12" top plate, nice appearance. If you are a do-it-yourselfer installs in give or take 6 hours. You will need a torque wrench and a 1" and 1/4 wrench to do the job.

I suggest the SuperGlide hitch. It's a bit pricey, about $2400, but you'll never have to think about whether you have to release the slider, it does it automatically. We've been in several situations were we quickly had to make sharp or U-turns and just did it. No worries. Well worth it for the peace of mind.

I will also have to say go with the Superglide. I have it on my shortbed and will not be without it as long as I own the shortbed. I have made U turns with this hitch that even made me wonder and to my happiness made it just fine. There is nothing better than not having to worry about driving down the road and having to stop and slide, and then slide it back and so on. Again just my opinion, buy it! You wont regret it with the shortbed.

I also agree the superglide is the best way to go, assuming the dollars are available. I also have to say we've had our manual slider for nine years and many miles and I've used the slider four times. The nose on the Montana gives you a far better turn radius than does most FW's. Also, if the installer does it correctly, on a shortbed the pincenter will be directly over the axle. If he does it like he would for a longbed, the pincenter will be two inches forward of the axle center and that will cut into your turn radius by a surprisingly large amount. We had one shortbed truck where it was mounted that way. If you can swing it, I'd recommend the superglide.

Well well... First post to the forum as a whole, and of course it's about my truck

2004 2500HD Crew Cab Duramax diesel, Allison transmission. This truck hasn't done any 5th wheel towing yet, all bumper pull. Being military, The army decided to move me to Alaska from Georgia. We ended up towing around 10,000 lbs bumper pull from Columbus, GA to Reno, NV where we dropped weight down to around 4000 lbs. Then we negotiated the Alcan up to Anchorage where my family currently resides. The trip was flawless other than one injector problem that was taken care of under warranty.

If all you chevy fans are truely interested, there's a dedicated site for Silverado owners, especially Diesel owners. www.dieselplace.com is the name. The only things we've done to the truck have been installation of a CB radio, a Banks 6 gun/SpeedLoader tuner, and Banks exhaust. It's sorta neat when your tow vehicle can blow the doors off of many "performance" vehicles out there.

Chevy brought the 3500 single rear wheel axle back for 05 I went with that as it give more GVW then 2500 and also CC is Long Bed. so it fits in garage where dually won't.
