With a bike rack in front of the truck, is there any risk of cutting down on the air flow to the engine and risking overheating anything? Am I correct in assuming that you don't wrap your bikes in anything (as a means of cutting down on the bug hits) as that would increase the risk of overheating?

David

See page one of this thread for my previous comments on Hidden Hitch and our experiences. No heat troubles to date.

We do NOT wrap the bikes. We get more bugs on Tana's nose than the bikes.

Just to add to all the good advice you already have gotten, we have a front hitch reciever and simply put in our bumper bike rack. But I didn't like the obstruction it created in front so I mounted the bikes on the roof of the TV (Dodge 3500 Ram). The use the fork mount system by Tuhle which lowers the profile slightly, they are still lower than the Monty (3075).

HamRad, Are you concerned about "destroying stuff" with the hitch itself or with the carrier attached? maybe you need one of those fiberglass poles with an orange pennant like kids put on their bicycles. You could cut it down so you just see the top and it doesn't obstruct your view.

Think an F-250 SuperDuty would stand a front hitch + an electric wheelchair a little over 200 lbs.?
Vanman,
I have hit a few things. Mostly walls and every now and then a light pole or something similar. I am always going so slow that I am able to stop before any damage to either the structure or the carrier occurs. But it is still a pain. I like the idea of the little fiberglass stick. I may do something like that. Thanks for the idea.

I carried the same setup on my 250 with no problem. The 250 is a lot "softer" than the 450 but still did the job just fine.

I received my hitch from here and got it mounted this weekend. I took about 10 mins, 7 of which was finding my wrench. Here are some pics of the hitch and the bikes. I may lower them a bit more, but the distraction was minimal for me.

Hitch Update. My service man installed a CURT front hitch on my Silverado. Used the same holes as the tow hooks. No cutting of anything, the receiver is right below the air dam. Found a HOLLYWOOD 2 bike carrier that works just fine. The bike rack has a small knob/crank that takes the slack out of the hitch. Very stable. Held the bikes at a height roughly 18 to 20 inches from the ground. No heat problems, great mod, best of all we had our bikes with us!
Problem solved.

Ok, Don't want to make this sound negative but my Dad (Tractor Trailer driver) has told many stories. Here's one that he wanted to make a point with me, when I was considering putting my bikes on the front of my van which was loaded, pulling a 30ft TT; "I wouldn't put anything on the front of my rig that might fall off and make me have to run it over, not saying its Ok for someone to run over stuff off the back of my rig but...."

One should NEVER say NEVER, but I don't see how our bikes could come off that bike rack. The rack has a clamp (actually 2 per bike). The clamp can be tightened up right nice like and then is lockable. Add a handful of bungie cords to hold the wheels so they don't spin.

Nope, one should NEVER say NEVER.

Mark, I found the hitch on the site you gave, but where can I find the reciever that bolts to the truck. The bike rack on that site fits in the reciever. Did I miss it somewhere?

Go to Hitches and then you will see the receivers. Match up to your tow Vehicle
